LAWTON, Okla.( Nov. 1, 2011) – In its final tournament of the fall season, Cameron’s men’s golf team battled tough winds, en route to a 283 and a fourth place finish at the Lion Fall Invitational. The tournament is being played in The Colony, Texas at the Tribute Golf Club, a course designed after famous holes in Scotland. Cameron’s 283 on the 6,535-yard, par-72 course was tied for the best team round on the day.
“We played much better today,” said Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar. “I think we got the traditional winds of Scotland and were able to experience the course the way it was designed. We got closer to the leaders, but we didn’t get close enough to move them. That part was not as good as we wanted, but I’m much more pleased today than I was yesterday.”
Between the varsity and JV teams, Hrnciar said six members of the Black and Gold improved upon their first round scores. Junior Kregg Wood had the low score on the day, shooting a 63 to finish in a tie for 11th with a 143. Junior Trey Lawson finished with a 142 after a second round 73, placing him in a tie for 7th place to lead Cameron. Junior Austin Weaver tied Wood with a 143, after his 72 on Tuesday. Freshman Corey Bounds and Sophomore Michael Kelly rounded out the varsity squad with a 144 and 146, respectively.
“Kregg (Wood) played well,” Hrnciar said. “(As a team)We played a little better finishing up. We did make a couple bogeys but that will happen. Once gone, always gone.”
Led by senior Garrett Smith with a 144, Cameron’s JV squad finished in 7th place with a 597. Freshman Bobby Good followed Smith with a 146, to tie for 19th place, three strokes ahead of fellow freshman Bradley Ferrell, who posted a 149. Sophomore Jamie Gray, 158, and freshman K.C. Colvin, 164, completed the travel team for Cameron.
Now that its fall season is complete, Hrnciar said the team will now prepare to assess each tournament this season to begin working on individual games.
“We want to take the weakest part of each person’s game and try to make it their strength in the spring,” he said. “Some is mental, some is physical.”
