LAWTON, Okla.( Nov. 1, 2011) – On a night when Cameron honored its five outgoing seniors, the volleyball team posted one of its more impressive victories of the season, defeating Midwestern State in four games, 19-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-22.

“We found something in game two and we certainly picked up our level in that game,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “There were a lot of times that I didn’t think we were playing as good as we can, but yet we certainly did enough.”

Cameron (15-12, 9-9) began the evening with a special recognition of the seniors, Malyssa Acton, Adrienne Lawson, Filly Ezenwa, Nikita Abbott and Sarah Corbett, for their hard work and time put into the program. As the game began, each senior stayed on the court to start their final home game as an Aggie. Lawson and Acton finished with 11 and eight kills, respectively; while Abbott finished with a kill and two blocks. Corbett and Ezenwa were also a force defensively, with five and four blocks, respectively.

“We got a good effort from that whole group (of seniors),” Tabbert said. “Their numbers were pretty balanced and they each found a way to contribute in the game. I’m pretty happy about that.”

A number of underclassman contributed as well, including freshman Kelle Carver, who hit .462 in the game with 13 kills. Sophomore Jenna Risoli posted a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs.

“She (Carver) bailed us out a few different times,” Tabbert said. “Jenna also had a solid game for us.”

The win for the Black and Gold places them comfortably in sixth place in the conference and a chance to avoid the two nationally ranked teams in the first round — West Texas A&M and Angelo State.
 
“It’s a lot better than being in 7th,” Tabbert said. “Our first objective was to make the tournament. To worry about seeding, it was on my mind, but priority was to get in. Once established we would make it, we wanted to be sixth.”

While Cameron still has two road games remaining until the tournament, Tabbert did say that he hopes his team can relax now and look forward to its accomplishments.

“I’m just happy for them (the team) and proud of them that they were able to get us to this point,” he said. “Hopefully we can relax and enjoy the rest of regular season. We still have challenges ahead of us though.”

The first challenge will be nationally ranked Angelo State (26-4, 15-3) as the Aggies travel to San Angelo, Texas Thursday. The season will wrap up with a road contest against Abilene Christian (18-12, 12-6) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Abilene, Texas.
