SAN ANGELO, Texas (Nov. 3, 2011) ¬¬— Cameron traveled to San Angelo, Texas Thursday night to take on the a nationally-ranked San Angelo Belles and though the Aggies lost 3-0, the team gave the home team all it could handle.
Cameron (14-13, 9-10) came out aggressive in the third set, keeping the game close at 8-10, before senior Adrienne Lawson went on a tear, picking up four kills in a string of five consecutive points for the Aggies, making the score 13-10. Cameron would extend its lead to 20-14, before the number 16 team in the nation made a move to tie the game at 21. The team would go on to fall 23-25, but the fight impressed Head Coach Doug Tabbert.
“Even though we were down 2-0, we came back in (game) three and took control for a chunk of it,” he said. “We competed more. We played better at the net and got a lot better touches at the net with blockers. We just played harder, better defense … just more competitive.”
The Black and Gold dropped game one 13-25, but came back fighting in game two. The team fell behind early, 5-1, but fought to tie the game at 16; taking advantage of a mistakes by their opponent and timely hitting from Lawson. Cameron would go on to keep it knotted at 23, until the Belles picked up two consecutive points to steal the game. Tabbert said he enjoyed the effort in game two but could tell his team had more to offer.
“We came out and just played harder(in game two, than in one),” he said. “We picked up our energy level. We were playing better, but there was still something missing. Game three was even better.”
The Aggies (14-13, 9-10) will return to action Saturday as it travels to Abilene, Texas to take on a nationally-ranked Wildcat (19-12, 13-6) team. The action will begin at 2 p.m.
