Aggie Tennis Completes Clean Sweep at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – As part of their week long road trip, the Cameron Aggies tennis squads made a stop at West Alabama to take on the Tigers in a pair of tennis matches with the Ags coming up with a pair of 9-0 sweeps.

For the men (7-1), who came into the week ranked No. 20 nationally, Santiago Romero and Patrick Eichler defeated Wade Covington and Clay Cooke,  8-4 and No. 1 and Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic  defeated  Juan Felipe Tellez and Lucas Cruz, 8-2 at No. 2. At No. 3, Manuel Barroetavena and Jeff Sasser defeated Lucas Nunes and Luis Ruiz, 8-1.

In singles, the Aggies completed a total sweep, without surrendering a single set, from top to bottom.

Romero defeated Tellez 6-1, 6-4 at the top while Eichler took down Nunes 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

Peixoto defeated Covington 6-2, 6-4 and Manuel Barroetavena defeated Ruiz, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. At No. 5, Janjic defeated Cruz, 6-2, 6-2, while at No. 6, Nicolas Clerc took down Cooke, 6-0, 6-2.

On the women’s side, it was a similar story as top to bottom the No. 18 Ags (4-1) made the sweep.

Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber, the reigning LSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, defeated Katy Shoptaugh and Emily Gerding, 8-4, at the top. At No. 2, Florencia Tornero and Sara Londono defeated Angy Cuellar and Courtney McDonald, 8-0 while at No. 3, Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg defeated Natalia Cardenas and Dasha Popova, 8-1.

On the singles side, Amanda Moberg defeated Cuellar, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1. At No. 2, Puckhaber defeated Cardenas in a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0. Sholles defeated Gerding, 6-1, 6-0 and at No . 4, Londono defeated Shoptaugh, 6-2, 6-2. To close the singles play, Antonia Moberg defeated Popova, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 5 and at No. 6, Tornero defeated Courtney McDonald, 6-2, 6-0.

The Ags continue their road trip in Pensacola, Fla., as a part of the West Florida tournament which begins play on March 11 and runs through March 14. They will face numerous top 25 teams including the No. 5 hosts, West Florida.
