PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 20 Cameron men’s tennis team opened the West Florida Tournament with a win on Friday, defeating No. 30 Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYUH) 5-3.
The Aggies were unable to grab wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, dropping those matches 8-3 and 8-4, respectively. However, CU’s Jeff Sasser and Manuel Barroetavena picked up a routine 8-2 victory over Andy Xing and Taylor de Hoyas at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Barroetavena continued his excellent play in his No. 4 singles match, topping BYUH’s CJ Adamson 7-6(5), 6-2.
At the No. 1 position, Santiago Romero bested No. 18 Rong Ma 6-1, 6-4.
Duje Janjic and Nicolas Clerc both needed three sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, but eventually dismissed their opponents 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
The only singles loss the Aggies faced came at the No. 2 position. The match at the No. 3 spot was left unfinished, though CU’s Thomas Peixoto had a 6-3, 4-6, 4-3 lead over his counterpart Diego Miranda.
The men will face West Florida at noon on Saturday.
