PENSACOLA, Fla. – Cameron women’s and men’s tennis teams fell to West Florida on Saturday in matching 5-4 decisions. Both West Florida’s women’s and men’s teams are ranked fifth in the nation.

On the women’s side, CU dropped the doubles matches at the No.1 and No. 2 positions, but Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg defeated Mariana Sonnervig and Hannah Durham at the No. 3 spot with an 8-4 win.

In singles, No. 27 Amanda Moberg lost her first set at the No. 1 position to West Florida’s Taylor Brewster 6-4, but came back to grab the second 7-6(4). Moberg went on to clinch the win after taking the super tiebreaker 10-7.

Julia Puckhaber also had a come-from-behind victory and defeated Yana Bokareva at the No. 2 slot. The CU standout and current Lone Star Conference Tennis Player of the Week won the match 0-6, 7-5, 11-9.

Sholles claimed the Aggies’ only other win, taking out Caitlyn Baines 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.

The singles matches at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions went to West Florida.

The men’s play followed a similar storyline to that of the women’s.

CU gave up doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3. However, Duje Janjic and Thomas Peixoto knocked out Domenico Sano and Sean Gunnels 8-6 at No. 2.

Santiago Romero sealed a win at the No. 1 singles slot, topping West Florida’s Leandro Ferreria 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Manuel Barroetavena overcame his counterpart at the No. 4 position in a tight 7-6(2), 6-4 decision.

CU’s Nicolas Clerc continued his outstanding undefeated season by dismissing Domenico Sano 6-4, 6-3.

Unfortunately, the men faced setbacks at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots.

The Aggies will take to the courts again on Sunday. The men will face Ouachita Baptist in the morning and then both teams will take on Alabama-Huntsville later in the afternoon.
