EDMOND, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies tennis squads took away a pair of wins from Washburn on Tuesday at the UCO Courts in Edmond to get Head Coach James Helvey within one match victory of his milestone 600th victory.
The No. 18 CU women’s squad (9-3) got career victory No. 598 for Helvey with a 7-2 win.
At the top of doubles, Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber came away with an 8-4 victory while Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg swept the No. 3 slot, 8-0.
The Lady Blues (6-1) were able to get their first point at No. 2 as Sara Londono and Florencia Tornero fell 8-6.
Up 2-1, the women got victories at the top five spots to seal the match. Washburn was able to get a second point at No. 6 as Antonia Moberg fell 4-6, 6-4, (10-7).
On the men’s side, the No. 20 Aggies (13-3) got an 8-1 victory over the No. 33 Ichabods (4-4) in a critical South Central region matchup.
In doubles play, the Ags got all three points behind a dominating 8-1 performance at No. 1 from Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc.
In singles play, the match was highlighted by Manuel Barreotavena’s gutsy performance at the No. 4 spot. After falling 6-7(6) in the first set, the Argentinean bounced back for a 6-4 second set victory and a super tiebreaker win for the team’s eighth point of the match.
Both teams will have an opportunity to get Helvey his 600th career win when they host perennial top flight regional opponent St. Edwards at the Cameron Tennis Complex on Saturday, March 26. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. for both squads.
