LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie men’s tennis team improved their overall record to 9-1 on Saturday after pulling off an 8-1 victory against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats (SBU).
CU went up 3-0 over the Bearcats after winning all three doubles matches.
The doubles duo of Patrick Eichler and Santiago Romero grabbed the 8-3 win at the top spot, while the No. 2 pair of Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic worked for their 8-4 win. However, Jeff Sasser and Manuel Barroetavena won easily at the No. 3 position, posting a score of 8-1.
In singles, Aggie freshman Nicolas Clerc played phenomenal tennis, executing his shots almost flawlessly. Clerc picked up the 6-2, 6-2 victory over his opponent Juan Estepa at the No. 6 spot.
Barroetavena handled the day’s windy conditions exceptionally well and outplayed his opponent Daniel Cardona to take the 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Peixoto also dispatched his counterpart at the No. 3 position. After an intense battle, the CU junior won the first set 7-6(4) and went on the win the second 6-2.
Romero and Janjic secured victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions as well, winning 6-2, 2-6 10-7 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.
After two hard-fought sets, Eichler was unable to come up with a win in his No. 2 singles match and fell 6-3, 6-4 to SBU’s Jorge Margiotta.
The CU men’s next action will come on March 10 when they will travel to Livingston, Ala. to take on West Alabama.
