Cameron Tennis Teams Have Tough Day in Abilene

by Amanda Cantu, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

The Cameron men’s and women’s tennis teams had a rough day on Wednesday, as both squads fell to conference rival Abilene Christian.

The CU men lost in a close 5-4 decision. The ACU men are currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the region, while the No. 19 Aggie men sit at No. 4 regionally.

The Black and Gold men started out ahead in the contest after going up 2-1 in doubles, but fell behind in singles.

The duo of Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc easily defeated ACU’s Hans Hach and Bryan Joiner 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. Jeff Sasser and Duje Janjic also picked up a win over the Wildcats. The pair took out Eldad Campbell and John Strahl 8-5 at the No. 3 position.

In singles, the men had tough losses, dropping four of the six matches played.

No. 16 Santiago Romero was unable to upset No. 15 Hach and fell 7-6, 6-1. Hach is the top player in the region, and is the only man ranked higher than Romero.

CU junior Thomas Peixoto produced two outstanding sets of tennis at the No. 2 position. The Brazilian clutched a 7-6(4), 7-6(6) victory over nationally ranked Campbell.

Nicolas Clerc was the only other man to clench a win for the Aggies. Clerc recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Joiner at the No. 6 spot and remains undefeated this season.

The No. 18 Cameron women were unable to earn a match against the No. 6 Wildcats and were defeated 8-0. ACU is the top team in the region, while the Aggies hold on to a No. 2 ranking.

The No. 12 doubles pair of Julia Mongin and Jaclyn Walker was too much for the talented tandem of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber, beating the CU team 8-3.

No. 23 Moberg faced another defeat at the hands of No. 3 Mongin in singles play. The ACU standout took the match 6-1, 7-6.

Puckhaber managed to earn a set against No. 15 Walker, but lost the match 6-2, 6-7, 10-5.

Elvira Sholles also pushed her opponent to three sets, but once again it was the Wildcats that came away with the win.

The Aggie women are now 16-6 on the season, while the men claim an 18-5 record.

The women will travel to Bolivar, Mo. on April 15 to compete in a trio of matches over the weekend. They will face Lidenwood University and Lincoln University on Friday and will square off against Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

The men’s next action will also be on Friday, when they do battle against Oklahoma Christian at 2:30 p.m. on CU’s home courts.
