The No. 18 Cameron women’s tennis team dropped the No. 23 Northeastern State Riverhawks, a conference rival, on Saturday in a close 5-4 decision, improving their overall record to 12-5. The match-up was a critical conference and regional contest for the Aggies. CU is second in the region, while the Riverhawks sit in third.
The women started off in a hole, after losing doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. However, the No. 14 pairing of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber had an outstanding performance at No. 1 and recorded an 8-3 win.
The duo secured routine wins in singles play as well. No. 27 Amanda Moberg picked up a victory against Michaela Romanova with a bagel and a breadstick at the top spot, while Puckhaber clutched a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Karolina Cichon at No. 2.
Elvira Sholles had an impressive showing at the No. 3 slot. She came back from a set down to win her match against Agata Skorupska 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Antonia Moberg and Florencia Tornero were unable to clench wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, which tied the contest between the Aggies and Riverhawks 4-4.
The winning match was decided in a clash between CU’s Sara Londono and Houda Bellamine at the No. 4 spot. Londono dropped the first set, but rallied back to overcome Bellamine in a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision.
The next challenge for both the women’s and men’s teams will come against conference foe Southeastern Oklahoma on April 6 in Durant, Okla.
