Aggie Tennis Teams Advance at Conference Championships

by Amanda Cantu, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

The Cameron tennis teams were in action Friday on the first day of the Lone Star Conference Championships. Both teams came away with victories, which secured the squads a place in regional competition.

The men defeated Southeastern Oklahoma 5-0 in the morning.

The pair of Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc worked hard for an 8-6 win over Alejandro Argumedo and Felipe Pimenta at the No. 1 position, while Thomas Peixoto and Patrick Eichler beat their counterparts 8-3 at No. 2.

In singles, Duje Janjic punished Thomas Adams at the No. 5 slot 6-0, 6-0.

Southeastern defaulted matches at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots, giving CU the first round victory.

Later in the day, the men battled Midwestern State, whom they lost to regular season play. The Aggies avenged their defeat by picking up a 5-3 win over the Mustangs in the semi-finals.

CU went up 2-1 after doubles, earning victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Clerc was the first to claim a singles win for the Aggies. He dispatched Bo Zaputovic 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.

Janjic was the next to see success. After taking the first set 6-4, the Croat fought back from 5-0 down to secure the second set 7-6(5).

Romero clenched the contest for the men by defeating Vjekosley Stipanic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

The Aggie squad will play against Abilene Christian in the finals tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

On the women’s side, the Black and Gold clutched a 5-2 win over Northeastern State in their first match of the day.

CU’s Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber routed their opponents at the No. 1 doubles spot, recording an 8-0 win. Sara Londono and Elvira Sholles picked up an identical 8-0 victory at the No. 2 position.

Moberg’s intense level of play continued in singles, as she doubled bageled her counterpart at the top spot.

Puckhaber and Sholles also came away with wins for the Aggies, earning 6-3, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-0 decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.

In the semi-finals later in the day, the women faced regionally ranked No. 1 Abilene Christian and fell 5-0.

In doubles, the tandem of Londono and Sholles were tied at 6-6 before losing 9-7 at No. 2.

Moberg and Puckhaber had their chances as well. The duo was up a break at 6-5, but went on to lose the match 8-6.

In singles, Londono and Florencia Tornero faced defeat at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, which gave the Wildcats the 5-0 win.

Despite the loss to Abilene, the women are assured a place in regional competition, which begins the first week of May. The location of play has yet to be determined.
