The Cameron men’s tennis team had a rough day in the Lone Star Conference Championship final on Saturday, falling 5-1 to Abilene Christian.
The Aggies started off 2-1 down after three tight doubles matches.
Thomas Peixoto and Patrick Eichler clutched CU’s lone victory at the No. 2 doubles position, defeating Bryan Joiner and Eldad Campbell 9-7.
Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc were upset 9-7 at the top spot, while Jeff Sasser and Duje Janjic lost 9-8(4) at No. 3.
In singles, Mateus Campos could not surpass Joiner at the No. 6 spot and was beaten 6-1, 6-3.
Peixoto also came up short, falling to Campbell 7-6(2), 6-3 at No. 2.
Aggie freshman Nicolas Clerc faced his first defeat of the year in the championship contest. The Argentine was taken out 6-4, 7-6(4) at No. 4.
The CU men at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 slots were in good position to win, but the matches were left unfinished as Abilene had already clenched the victory.
Despite the loss, the men are guaranteed a place in regional play, which will begin the first week of May.
