Aggie Tennis Teams Surpass Savage Storm

by Amanda Cantu, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

The Cameron tennis teams were dominant on Wednesday with both the men and women taking out conference rival Southeastern Oklahoma on the Savage Storm’s home courts in 8-1 decisions.

The No. 19 Aggie men picked up two of the three doubles matches.

Thomas Peixoto and Patrick Eichler came out on top with an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Jeff Sasser and Duje Janjic overwhelmed their opponents in an 8-0 blowout at No. 3.

The men went on to collect all six of the singles matches.

Jorge Gerosi and Nicolas Clerc had easy wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, dishing out a pair of double bagels. Janjic’s match was headed in the same direction, but after securing the first set 6-0 the CU sophomore’s counterpart retired.

Manuel Barroetavena and Santiago Romero also clenched wins for the Aggies at the No. 4 and No. 1 slots, recording 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1 victories, respectively.

Peixoto managed to pull out a win as well. The Brazilian got the better of his opponent at the No. 2 spot in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 decision.

After topping the Savage Storm, the men improved their overall record to 16-3 and remain undefeated in conference play.

Like the men, the No. 18 Aggie women earned an 8-1 victory over Southeastern.

CU seized all three doubles matches in decisive fashion.

The No. 14 duo of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber routed their counterparts at the No. 1 position with an 8-0 pounding, while Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg recorded a nearly effortless 8-1 win at No. 3.

Sara Londono and Florencia Tornero bested their opponents at No. 2 in a hard-fought 8-6 victory.

In singles, Sholles shattered her rival at the No. 3 slot 6-0, 6-0.

Both Amanda Moberg and Londono produced routine 6-2, 6-2 wins, while Puckhaber and Tornero overpowered their opponents 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively.

The CU women are now 13-5 overall and have a 3-1 conference record.

The Aggie men will see their next action at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 8 when they compete against conference foe Incarnate Word at the CU tennis courts. The men and women both will face regional rival Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m. the same day.
