Cameron Defeats Texas A&M Commerce In 5 Game Thriller

Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 9, 2011) ¬¬— Cameron’s volleyball team has improved its record to 3-2 with a hard-fought thriller against the Texas A&M Commerce Lions.

The teams battled throughout the contest, culminating in a race to 15.

The Aggies and Lions exchanged points until midway through the final game, leaving them tied at 7. Cameron would go on to win five points in a row to pull ahead 12-7. Commerce would cut the lead to within two, but the lead proved too steep as a Kelle Carver kill sealed the deal for CU.

Head Coach Doug Tabbert said the team that was beaten today was not the team he scouted on film. “They did some things better today than I thought they would based on film,” he said. “I give them a lot of credit. They played hard really.”

Cameron started the afternoon off with a 25-20 win in game one , but the Lions would battle back to win game two 25-21. Despite losing game two, the team remained confident and won game three 25-22 and pulled ahead in game four 21-18.

“That was the first time I felt a little comfortable,” Tabbert said. “But then we missed a serve and that changed everything. In the fifth (game) you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Tabbert said his team played hard throughout the five games, and that’s how they were able to secure the victory.

“Hopefully we have some confidence, but it’s early,” he said. “We are learning what it takes to compete. That’s important for us, but It’s still early. There’s a lot of volleyball.”

The whole team played well Tabbert said, but there were a few that stuck out he said. Senior Adrienne Lawson, outside hitter, lead the team with 20 kills, followed by freshman Kelle Carver with 19. The coach said sophomore Jenna Risoli and junior Julisa Ocasio also did a great job of securing the middle.

The team will travel to Kingsville on the 15th for their next contest against Texas A&M Kingsville. First serve it set for 7 p.m.
