OKLAHOMA CITY—The Cameron University men’s and women’s tennis teams both opened their fall campaign with wins this afternoon when they posted identical 8-1 victories over Cowley College.
The men got things started by sweeping all three doubles positions. Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic earned a 9-7 win over their counterparts at the top spot, while Mateus Campos and Nicolai Ferrigno topped their opponents 8-4. Jorge Gerosi and Angelo Lencioni also recorded an 8-4 win at the No. 3 position. In singles play, most of the CU men put away their opposition in an easy fashion. Campos lost only one game in two sets when he pummeled Brandon Patterson at the No. 5 slot, while Lencioni double bageled Trevor Adams at the No. 6 spot.
Peixoto saw the sole defeat for the Aggies, falling 6-1, 6-4 to Cowley’s No. 1 Zack Evenden.
Like the men, the Cameron women came out on top in the three doubles matches and saw their only loss at the No. 1 singles position. Amanda Moberg lost in three tough sets to Diane Davitaia, recording a final score of 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
Florencia Tornero was also pushed to three sets at the No. 5 slot, but she eventually overcame Mariah Vargas 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Elvira Sholles easily dismissed Kristin Richardson 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position, and Julia Puckhaber came away with a 6-4, 4-4 win after her opponent retired.
The next action for both Aggie teams will be on Sept. 20 at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex when they face off against Oklahoma Baptist. The teams will begin play at 10:30 a.m. and again at 3:30 p.m.
