CU Tennis Teams Barrel Past Bison

by Amanda Cantu, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

LAWTON, Okla.—The Cameron University tennis teams were in action at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on Tuesday, easily defeating Oklahoma Baptist by winning all four contests in the day’s doubleheader competition.

In the morning match, both the Aggie squads posted 9-0 victories over the Bison.

In the men’s doubles battle, the pair of Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic took out Gonzalo Garzon and Augustin Jenssen 8-4 at the No. 1 position, while Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos record a score of 8-5 to dispatch Francisco da Silva and Dario Macanovic at the No. 2 spot.

CU’s Jorge Gerosi and Angelo Lencioni overcame Bryan Shuler and Jacob Albritton in a tiebreak to claim the win at the No. 3 slot.

The Aggies’ winning momentum carried over into singles play, with all six men earning victories.

Peixoto, the team’s lone senior, produced some of the best tennis of his career to put away Garzon 7-6, 6-3 at the top spot.

CU newcomers Ferrigno and Lencioni had routine wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, posting scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.

The women also made easy work of their OBU counterparts.

The outstanding doubles duo of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber dropped just one game in their match at the No. 1 spot. Elvira Sholles and Sara Londono defeated their opponents easily as well and came away with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 position.

The Black and Gold won the No. 3 doubles match by default, as the Bison chose not to compete at that slot.

In singles, Aggie sophomore Florencia Tornero double bageled Shauna Beach at No. 5, while Puckhaber and Londono both defeated their opponents in identical 6-0, 6-1 matches at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots.

In the afternoon matches, Cameron proved to be just as dominate. The men once again overwhelmed OBU 9-0, and the women came away with an 8-1 victory.

The CU men changed their line-up in the afternoon and had doubles partners Ferrigno and Campos playing the No. 1 slot. The pair showed the same effectiveness they had earlier in the day, beating their counterparts 8-7.

The Aggie teams at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions lost only two games combined to earn their victories.

Janjic played the No. 1 singles spot beautifully in the afternoon. The Croat persevered past Garzon in three tough sets and eventually clenched the 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 victory.

Campos and Gersoi also came away with well-deserved wins, documenting 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-1 scores at No. 3 and No. 6 positions.

On the women’s side, the team gave up only one match on their way to victory.

The Bison’s doubles pair of Paola Costa and Lillian Ferreira was too much for Sholles and Londono at the top spot, as the OBU duo earned the 8-3 win.

In singles competition, the Aggie women once again found their winning drive.

Sholles destroyed Kelsi Lord 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 slot. Additionally, sisters Amanda and Antonia Moberg both routed their opponents in matching 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 5.

Both CU teams are now 3-0 on the season and will take to the court again Sept. 23-24 when they compete in the Midwestern State University Tournament in Wichita Falls.
