Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 22, 2011) — Cameron’s Volleyball Team dropped a hard-fought match Thursday in the Aggie Gym to the Tarleton State TexAnns, 3-1.
“They (Tarleton) have a lot of firepower, a lot of weapons offensively,” said Cameron Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “When a team has a lot like that, it’s hard to deal with. From what they showed tonight, they are pretty good.”
Cameron (5-4, 4-3) came out strong on its home court, edging Tarleton (8-5, 4-1) in the first game 25-17.
“We came out strong in game 1,” Tabbert said. “They made mistakes and we took advantage of them pretty well. They solved those issues after (game) one and we struggled to match them, in terms of offense.”
Tabbert said his defense remained strong, despite dropping three games in a row, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-15, respectively. And effort, a staple of Tabbert’s team in his first season, never wavered.
“I thought our kids played hard,” he said. “It would have been easy to throw in towel, but I don’t think we ever stopped trying to win rallies or compete. There is something to be said for that. I hope we recognize the value in that.”
While the offense struggled, the coach said freshman Rebecca Green stood out defensively, as well as junior Joanie Dubberly, senior Adrienne Lawson and sophomore Mariah Westlake.
“Rebecca (Green) also made some plays offensively,” Tabbert said. “She was able to work and find some kills.”
Tabbert was impressed with the effort shown despite the loss and said it’s that kind tenacity that it will take to compete with the upper teams in the conference.
Cameron will be on the road for its next six games, with the first one on September 27 against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee. The next home game will be October 6 at 7 p.m. against Angelo State.
