Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 27, 2011) ¬¬—Cameron’s Volleyball Team overcame a tough five set thriller to defeat the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in the night’s opener, but it took only three sets for the Oklahoma Baptist Bison to defeat the Cameron Aggies in the nightcap.
Up first for the Aggies (6-5, 4-3) was the Lady Lions (11-5). And after five hard sets, the Aggies found themselves victories 25-21, 9-25, 30-28, 18-25, 15-12.
“We just hung in and found a way to win some big rallies down the stretch,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “I never felt we were playing great, but we found a way to win key points down stretch.”
Senior Adrienne Lawson and freshman Kelle Carver led the way for Cameron in the first match, as each posted 18 kills in the contest. Sophomore Mariah Westlake and Junior Julisa Ocasio each pitched in defensively with 16 and 17 digs, respectively. But it was Lawson with 21 digs that really stepped up defensively, the coach said.
“That’s pretty good for non libero to have 21 digs,” Tabbert said. “We defended some of what they did down the stretch a little better, extended rallies and they eventually made some errors. We were more efficient down the stretch and got a few big kills down the stretch.”
In the second match, the Aggies failed to mount any offense, falling to the Bison (16-9) in three sets, 25-20, 25-22, 26-24.
“We just didn’t get enough offense,” the first year head coach said. “Our service game was good, but we failed to capitalize on it and really struggled to put the ball away. They (The Bison) swung away freely. They had no regard, just kept swinging and swinging. We didn’t answer the bell very well when they did that.”
Freshman Kelle Carver led the Aggies with eight kills in 19 attempts. The Bison were led by Kristen Pressley, who had 16 kills in 42 attempts. The Aggies hang tough in all three games, but failed to mount enough offense to finish the games with the advantage.
Cameron will be on the road for the weekend, participating in the University of Texas Permian Basin Tournament in Odessa, Texas. The Aggies will take on Fort Hayes State and Panhandle State on day one, followed by matches against Southern Arkansas and the University of Texas Permian Basin.
The team will return home on October 6 to take on Angelo State at 7 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
