SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Members of Cameron University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams advanced today at the ITA Regional Championships.

Jorge Gerosi worked his way past Washburn’s Arek Kozaczuk 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 in the first round. The CU junior picked up his game in the second round, defeating Jarrod Liston of Midwestern State 6-4, 6-2. Gerosi, who is arguably in the toughest section of the draw, will next face the top seed Hans Hach from Abilene Christian.

Cameron’s Duje Janjic and Nicolai Ferrigno also made it through the first two rounds of the championships.

Janjic dispatched his first opponent 6-0, 7-5 and then went on to outplay MSU’s Luke Joyce, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In his next match, Janjic will take on the sixth seed Alfredo Desiati of ACU.

After winning the first set of his opening match 6-2, Ferrigno battled for the second set, eventually earning a 7-6(5) win over East Central’s Marc Fillat. His second round match proved more routine, as he put away Northwest Missouri State’s Luis Altimeres 6-2, 6-1. Ferrigno’s section of the draw opened up after the second seed Ned Boone defaulted in the first round. As a result, the Dane will see MSU’s Rory de Boer in his upcoming match.

Aggie senior Thomas Peixoto had an easy first round win, defeating his counterpart 6-2, 6-0, but fell in three heartbreaking sets to Incarnate Word’s David Ballenger, who earned the 6-7, 7-6, 10-7 victory. 

Mateus Campos and Angelo Lencioni saw only one round of action today, and both men advanced. Campos snatched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Southeastern’s Guillermo Haugen and Lencioni had a first round bye.

Multiple CU players advanced on the women’s side as well.

Amanda Moberg, the second seed in the women’s draw, cruised through the first and second rounds, recording 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 wins over her opponents. She will meet Micah Hermsdorf of ACU in the next round.

Julia Puckhaber, the fifth seed, also easily earned her way into the Round of 16. The Cameron standout first overtook Camila Quesada 6-3, 6-2 before punishing Southwest Baptist’s Adrienn Kovac 6-1, 6-1. Next up for Puckhaber is Newman University’s top player Kirstie Symon.

CU’s Elvira Sholles beat Akanesi Fa 6-1, 7-5 in the first round, but later fell to the sixth seed Julia Shviadok 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in a very tight match.

Sara Londono also had a close three set contest. The Aggie senior lost to ECU’s Elisabeth Dignard 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 in the opening round.

Sophomore Antiona Moberg made quick work of her opening match, producing a 6-0, 6-2 victory, but fell in the next round to UIW’s Andi Botha.

After working hard to secure her first round match 6-4, 6-7, 10-4, Cameron’s Florencia Tornero continued her winning momentum in the next round by defeating Denissia Gonzalez, clenching herself a place in the Round of 16.

The Black and Gold were successful in doubles play as well, with three doubles teams booking themselves a spot in the final eight.

The fourth seeded partners of Peixoto and Janjic won their first round match 6-2, 6-2. The pair went on to take the next round’s contest 6-3, 6-4. In the Quaterfinals, the CU team is drawn against MSU’s sixth seeded twosome of Luke Joyce and Colby Meeks.

The doubles tandem of Ferrigno and Campos picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the opening round and a 6-4, 6-3 win in the Round of 16. The partners will face a challenge in the next round when they will be confronted with the top seeds of Domingos Carissimo and Jorge Margiotta.

Amanda Moberg and Puckhaber, the top seeded women’s doubles duo, clenched a 6-2, 6-3 win before going on to grab their next match 7-5, 6-3. The pair will play ACU’s Julia and Laura Mongin in the Quaterfinals.

Sholles and Londono played excellent tennis in their opening round to knock out their counterparts by capturing a 7-5, 6-2 victory, but later fell to UIW’s Ivana Katavic and Maggie Doney 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 in an incredibly close match.

Play will resume tomorrow and continue through Sunday in Springfield, Mo.
