Aggies Win Two In First Day Of Permian Basin Tournament

Lawton, Okla. (Sept. 30, 2011) ¬¬ Cameron’s Volleyball Team continued its turnaround season today, defeating the Fort Hays State Tigers 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20) and Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-13).

“It was back and forth,” Head Coach Doug Tabbert said in regards to the opening game. “We had momentum at times, they had it at times, but we outlasted them really.”

Senior Adrienne Lawson and freshman Kelle Carver led the way for Cameron (8-5, 4-3) in game one, with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Senior Sarah Corbett had a major impact, hitting .583 with eight kills, only one error, while assisting in a team high four blocks. The Tigers (10-7) had no answer for the Aggies down the stretch; something Tabbert said had a lot to do with his team’s defense.

“Julisa had a ton of digs, and gave us great, solid defense,” Tabbert said. “Neither team could mount any offense consistently.”

Game two was an all Aggies dual as Cameron took on Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-13). But CU’s offense proved too much for Panhandle State. Senior Filly Ezenwa had a coming out party, erupting for nine kills on 12 attempts and no errors (.750). Fellow senior Adrienne Lawson led the team 11 kills on 25 attempts and four errors (.280). Sophomore Jenna Risoli had a strong game at setter, with 36 assists. Risoli also had one service ace to her credit. Tabbert said sophomore Mariah Westlake had a great game at service receive, adding that she “really stood out.”

“We were better,” he said. “We were a little more consistent. They struggled at times and we took advantage of the problems they had. Still think we need to reach a higher level tomorrow than we were at today.”

Action for the Aggies begins at 1 p.m. tomorrow as Cameron hits the court for a rematch against Southern Arkansas (8-7).

“They’ve had some good wins and have a good season going,” Tabbert said. “If they play well, they can do a lot of things. We are going to have our hands full. It should be a good match.”

The Lady Muleriders defeated the Aggies in the season opener 3-2. The tournament will wrap up with a match between Cameron and the tournament host Texas Permian Falcons (9-8).
