Cameron drops tough match against Angelo State

LAWTON, Okla.--Despite a slow start in the first set the Cameron University Aggie volleyball team played strong against the #11 Angelo State Rambelles but lost the match three sets to one (11-25, 25-19, 18-25, 21-25) at the Aggie Gym.

Box Score

In the first set, Angelo State had too many rallies for Cameron to comeback from. The Aggies attack could only muscle up 11 points in the set.

The second set was a different story for the Aggies, as they stayed with Angelo State through 10-10. After a point by the Rambelles scored a point, the Aggies mounted a five point rally that gave them the lead that they never gave back.

Set three started with a 3-1 Aggie lead followed by back and forth scoring plays, but for ever CU point Angelo State scored two that gave them the win, 25-18.

Ultimately the game was decided in set four. The teams traded points up to 19-17 in favor of CU. After a timeout, Angelo State went on an 8-2 run that would win them the set and the match.

"We are just trying to find the level of play that it takes to compete and sustain that longer. Today we did a good job sustaining it after the first set, but we are still trying to learn what that level of play is," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "We got to figure out how to play as hard as we did last night and today against those two good teams. We do that, and we give ourselves a good chance. That is what we got to take from this weekend. The level of effort today is what we need to do against Incarnate Word and Kingsville. That is what it is going to take to win those matches."

The Aggie attack was led by Kathryn Evans with 15 kills, Rebecca Green with 12 kills, and Annelise Carpenter with 10 kills. They were assisted by Jenna Risoli who dished up 40 assists and added nine digs for the Aggies. Cameron also had three girls with double-digit dig nights: Julisa Ocasio had 25 digs, Mariah Westlake had 14 digs, and Erin Hardy had 13 digs. Tarayn McMillan also helped out the Aggie defense by adding five blocks to the effort.

Cameron's next match will be on Oct. 19 at Incarnate Word, in San Antonio, Texas.
