CU finishes in third at The Classic

LAWTON, Okla.--The Cameron University men’s golf team finished the day where they started, in third place, at The Classic at The Tribute Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.

Cameron shot a 286 on day two of the tournament, which, with their 290 from yesterday gave them their 576 score for the tournament.

"We had a chance all day today to win the event, but we struggled in the last four holes," said head coach Jerry Hrnciar. "We lost nine shots to par and we couldn't keep pace with Newman."

"But overall, I'm proud of our JV team this weekend finishing sixth.  They finished higher than several other programs who had their varsity team playing.  It was great to see two Cameron teams in the top six."

Both Trey Lawson and Austin Weaver tied for fourth place overall shooting a 70 today with combined score of 141. Corey Bounds improved from his 75 yesterday and shot a 72 today, which gave him a 147 and put him tied for 24th. Kregg Wood finished tied for 28th after he shot identical 74s on days one and two to give him a 148 total. Cullen Stahl tied for 34th with his 149 (74,75) two round score.

The Cameron JV team was able to jump up a spot from yesterday and finish in sixth with a 586. They were led by Bradley Ferrell (75,71) and Felipe Anzarut (71,75) who both shot 146s and finished tied for 20th. Michael Kelly finished tied for 24th with a 147 (76,71), Weston Ward also finished tied for 34th with a 149 (74,75), and Jacob Caldwell tied as well for 38th with a 150 (77,73).

Lone Star Conference foe Midwestern State jumped up to second and edged out Cameron by one stroke. The only other LSC school, Texas A&M-Commerce, finished 4th.

"We were getting steady this fall in our play," said Hrnciar. "Our problem that we need to work on heading in the spring is finding balance in our lineup."

With this tournament in the books Cameron will begin its winter offseason and get ready for the upcoming spring of 2013 season.
