LAWTON—After experiencing several delays due to wet weather conditions, the Cameron University baseball team kicked off its second series of the season this afternoon. The Aggies were originally scheduled to play a double header against foe Oklahoma Panhandle State University, but because of a mixture of delays and darkness, the squads were only able to work through one and half games. The Aggies did well to pick up a 4-2 win in the lead-off game of the afternoon.

Cameron baseball coach Todd Holland was pleased to see his men come through on such a tough day.

“We had a lot of tough situations, but we pulled it out,” Holland said. “I learned a lot about our team. Maybe this is going to be the type of team where we have to get behind and then just chip away.”

Holland was especially complimentary of how well the CU pitchers performed as well as the outstanding coaching they have received from graduate assistant Brian Wyatt. Senior Wade Myatt opened the series for the Black and Gold and refused to give up a single earned run. Colton Davis clenched the win for the team, giving up only one run.

“Our pitching staff has done a excellent job. Brian has been great in helping our pitchers give our team an opportunity to win,” Holland said.

OPSU produced the first run of the game with Thomas McGuckin coming across home plate after teammate Jordan Bernal reached on error by the third baseman in the top of the third inning. CU answered back in the bottom of the fourth when newcomer Benshell Garcia scored a run on an RBI double by first baseman Kevin Waukau.

The Aggie bats really heated up in the bottom of the sixth when the Black and Gold added three runs to their score. It all started with second baseman Josh Dawson being handed a walk by OPSU pitcher Sean Williams with only one out on the scoreboard. Garcia then earned his way on base with a single up the middle, advancing Dawson to second. Waukau went on to reach on an error by the right fielder, advancing the runners yet again. Dawson and Garcia then scored when sophomore Brad Blumer singled through the right side. A single to right center from Tyler Cox brought Waukau across the plate. Williams struck out the next two batters, causing the inning to come to an end.

OPSU earned another run in the seventh inning, but were unable to do more damage, resulting in CU coming away with the 4-2 win.

The two teams were only able to get through three innings in the second game of the day, when play was suspended for darkness. The suspension may have been to CU’s advantage as OPSU was up 3-0.

“The game is not over. We still have a chance to win, and hopefully tomorrow we get after it and get some wins,” Holland said.

The game will resume tomorrow at noon and will be followed by two more contests between the squads.
