WICHITA, Kansas (March 10, 2012) — Cameron fell to Newman in Saturday’s doubleheader, losing 7-5 in game one and 5-4 in game two. The losses give the Jets the weekend sweep over the Aggies and drop CU’s record to 12-10 on the season.
“We had a couple of bad innings in each game,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “We had chances in each of the games but came up short. I think we are still trying to figure out who we are and how to win.”
Newman (15-6) jumped ahead early in game one, plating three runs in the first three innings. Cameron woke its bats up in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on a RBI single by Kevin Lum to make the score 3-2.
But the Jets would go on the offensive again in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on four consecutive single and a sacrifice fly. Newman would pick up its final run in the inning on a throwing error by Tyler Cox to make the score 6-2, Newman.
Cameron would chip away at the lead in the fifth inning, as an error by the Jets’ rightfielder on a routine single by Andy Garcia allowed Nick Smith and Taylor Lyons to score.
After Newman added another run to its lead in bottom of the fifthth, CU went into the sixth inning trailing 7-4.
The inning started in favor of the Black and Gold, as Brad Blumer, who singled to start the inning, came in to score on a RBI double by pinch-hitter Colton Davis. But the Jets would go to their bullpen to pick up three outs to end the threat.
Cameron struggled in the 7th inning, allowing the Jets to seal the 7-5 victory. James Rhodes started and went 4.1 innings to take the loss for Cameron, dropping his record to 2-2 on the season.
Game two played out differently, as CU took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning.
The Aggies scored two runs in the 4th inning on an RBI triple by Josh Dawson and a RBI single by Cox. A Kaleb Brawner double in the 5th inning gave Cameron a 3-2 lead.
Newman would respond in the home half of the 5th, scoring three big runs on four hits to take the 5-3 lead. The Jets scored their runs with two outs in the inning on two big two-out singles.
Cameron was able to muster one run in the sixth inning as Benshell Garcia doubled to drive in Dawson, but was unable to score the tying run the seventh inning.
We were in every ball game (this series) until about the sixth inning … that’s when it fell apart,” Holland said. “It’s (the key) just situational hitting and not making errors when we need to get an out. It’s mental stuff. We out hit them in almost every game, but we also had more errors too. Which, if you make errors you aren’t gonna’ win many games.”
Despite the losses, Holland said the important games don’t start until next week when the team travels to Canyon, Texas to take on West Texas A&M in the conference opener.
“It was nonconference, which is good, but it really all starts next weekend in Amarillo,” he said. “We have to get it going then. These are games we need to win.”
