LAWTON, Okla. (March 10, 2012) — Cameron overcame adverse conditions to take a 5-4 victory over Incarnate Word Saturday, in a game that pushed CU to its limits. Drew Wright battled rain and wind to smash a double to left center, driving in Claren Hurlbut in the bottom of the 7th inning to give Cameron victory over Incarnate Word.
“It (our hitting) was clutch,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “I was really proud of our clutch hitting and Cheyenne (Brown)… one of her best performances on the mound.”
Cheyenne Brown (5-7) threw a complete game for the Aggies (10-13, 1-3), surrendering nine hits and four runs, only three earned. She struck out five and only walked two.
“She did a really good job of getting ground balls and plugging away. She’d get behind in counts but battle back. She and Sonia did a great job of controlling their offense attack.”
Incarnate Word (11-8, 1-3) struck first, taking advantage of a dropped third strike early in the inning to plate a run.
But Cameron responded by way of the long ball, as Drew Wright knocked her third homerun of the season deep over the fence in left center.
The Cardinals struck again in the third inning on a solo homerun by Leah Padilla to make the score 2-1.
Not to be outdone, Sonia Foutch stepped up for the Black and Gold in the bottom of the third and smashed a solo shot over the right field fence to knot the game at two. The homer was her fourth of the season.
It was Leslie Martini’s turn in the bottom of the fifth, as she blasted a two-run bomb to put CU up 4-2.
UIW would knock in a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to set the table to Wright’s big hit.
Megan Bell got the action started in the bottom of the 7th inning, pinch-hitting for Claren Hurlbut. After drawing a walk in a tough at-bat, Hurlbut would re-enter to run the bases. Drew Wright followed Bell and didn’t wait long. Jumping on the second pitch she saw, driving the ball all the way to the fence in left center. Hurlbut was on her horse the entire way and just beat the throw to score the winning run and give the Aggies its first conference victory of the season.
“It was just nice to have a ton of positive energy today,” Watson said. “We didn’t play well Monday in our home opener. So, for us to come out and have positive energy at home … it impacted everyone’s performance. Now, the test is to come out tomorrow with the same intensity.”
An added bonus for the Aggies was to pick up a victory over the preseason Pitcher of the Year, Brianna Sanchez.
“Brianna is really, really good,” Watson said. “Her ball moves a lot, and for us to be able to jump on her early … that was big for us. We had some good at bats. May be the result wasn’t always what we wanted, but we plugged away. We need to do the same thing tomorrow.”
Game two of Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed to Sunday due to rain showers. Sunday’s doubleheader will begin at noon.
