WICHITA – The nationally-ranked Cameron University men’s and women’s tennis teams earned back-to-back victories today in Kansas. CU began the day by defeating Washburn in Topeka, and then went on to roll over Newman in Wichita.
The No. 14 women kicked things off against Washburn by grabbing hold of all three doubles contests. The No. 25 pair of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber knocked out their opponents at the top spot 8-3, while the Aggie duos at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions picked up 8-4 and 9-7 decisions, respectively.
The excellent play continued into singles. Amanda Moberg toppled Sophie O’Neil 6-1, 6-0 and Puckhaber brought down Morgan Rainey 6-3, 6-3. CU standouts Sara Londono, Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg secured victories as well. The three ladies have failed to drop a singles match this spring season. Sophomore Florencia Tornero capped things by beating Alyssa Castillo at the No. 5 slot by a score of 6-4, 6-0, allowing the Black and Gold to clasp a 9-0 shutout.
The men made quick work of Washburn as well, coming away with an 8-1 result.
Like the women, the No. 18 men took all of their doubles matches. The top team of Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic thumped counterparts Arkadiusz Koxaczuk and Maciej Winiarz 8-5. The pairing of Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos seized an 8-6 decision at No. 2, while Gonzalo Garzon and Jorge Gerosi overpowered their opponents at the No. 3 slot 8-4.
In singles, the men saw only one loss which came at the top position. Janjic and Garzon collected routine wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions with scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1 respectivley. Ferrigno and Campos had an easy time of their opponents as well. CU junior Gerosi stumbled in his first set, dropping it 6-1, but came back to clinch the next two 6-1, 6-2.
Later in the day, the Aggie teams produced another set of wins, this time over Newman. Both teams locked up victory without dropping a match.
The women’s doubles duos at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots each pulled out 8-0 decisions. Meanwhile, Sholles and Antonia Moberg hammered their opponents 8-3.
Aggie senior Sara Londono had an altogether impressive day of play. She failed to surrender even one game against Newman, as the Colombia native double bageled Cortney Dold at the No. 3 singles position.
Juniors Amanda Moberg and Puckhaber had remarkable days as well, giving up just two games each. In addition, Sholles and Tornero recorded 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1 victories. The match at the No. 6 spot was not played, allowing CU women to document an 8-0 win and improve their overall record to 11-1.
The men were just as successful as the women. They picked up all three doubles matches easily. Ferrigno and Campos had an especially routine time as they took out Christopher Copenhaver and Kevin Klein 8-0.
The Black and Gold carried their momentum into singles play. Peixoto and Janjic had straightforward wins, collecting 6-2, 7-6 and 6-0, 6-0 decisions at the top two slots. Garzon secured a nice 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 position, and Campos outplayed Jeff Wherritt 6-1, 6-1.
Freshmen Angelo Lencioni and Dean Weigelt also grossed nearly effortless decisions in favor of the Aggies. Lencioni defeated Jared Ferris 6-1, 6-3, while Weigelt walloped his opponent 6-1, 6-0.
The CU men commanded the 9-0 win and are now 10-3 overall.
The Black and Gold women and men will take a break from play until 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 when they face off against overarching conference and regional rival Abilene Christian at the Striech-Henry Tennis Complex.
