Aggies Win Weekend Series Over Incarnate Word

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAWTON, Okla. (March 11, 2012) — Softball split a doubleheader with Incarnate Word Sunday, dropping the first game 6-2, while winning game two impressively with a 13-4, five inning run rule. The Sunday split gave the Aggies the 2-1 weekend series win over the Cardinals.

“Overall, to get the split today is big,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “We won the series and that’s big for us. There have been times we haven’t played very good softball. To come back after losing the first (game today) says a lot about the team and where their mindset is. They were ready. We kept plugging away and things fell into place.”

“Winning the series was really huge because we were playing at home. There were some distractions with the weather and what not. UIW is ahead of us in standings … this was a big weekend for us.”

UIW (12-9, 2-4) controlled the first game, as preseason LSC Pitcher of the Year Brianna Sanchez controlled the game from the circle. Carrie Dilks took the loss for CU (11-14, 2-4) in the game, as the Cardinals scored five of its six runs on the long ball. The Aggies did muster two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Drew Wright and Sonia Foutch each picked up a RBI, but failed to pose a threat in the game.

But game two was the bright spot for the Aggies on the day. The Cardinals struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first, one coming off of Cameron’s lone error in the game.

The Black and Gold responded in the home half on the inning on a Leslie Martini RBI single, scoring Drew Wright.

After a 1-2-3 inning by CU pitcher Kelsy Hebert, the Aggies continued to build confidence in their bats, exploding with a seven-run inning to take an 8-2 lead. Cameron landed its first three batters on base to set up a bases loaded situation with Misty Dooley knocked in two runs, followed by a three-run bomb by Sonia Foutch to clear the bases. Amy Garcia picked up the final RBI in the inning, driving a single through the right side to score L. Martini.

After another quick inning by Hebert, CU again found its rhythm, scoring five more runs in the third inning to take a 13-2 lead. L. Martini picked up the first RBI on a single, scoring Dooley. Micah Foutch stepped up next and blasted a double to the gap to score L. Martini. Amanda Karth was next up to the plate and she delivered big. Karth took a low pitch and golfed a laser over the left field fence for the innings final two runs.

The Cardinals did not go out quietly, scoring two runs in their final opportunity to close the gap in the final score to 13-4. Hebert pitched the complete game for her third victory of the season.

“Kelsy (Hebert) did a fantastic job on the mound,” Watson said. “Today her pitches were moving everywhere. We also made some nice plays defensively behind her. Her six strike-outs tells you that the change of speed ... man she had them fooled. Their timing was off. Amy (Garcia) also did a great job behind the plate of calling the right pitches at the right time.”

Each of CU’s nine batters scored a run in game two, a stat that Coach Watson was amazed by.

“That just tells you that we had quality at-bats,” she said. “Usually you get three to four (at-bats) a game, and you’ve got to get better each time. Scoring runs helps every phase of the game. It gives everyone confidence.”

Cameron’s next conference battle will take place next weekend, as the Aggies travel to Denton, Texas to take on Texas Woman’s University for the three game series beginning Friday.
