LAWTON, Okla. (March 28, 2012) — The Cameron tennis teams shook off the Spring Break rust Wednesday, as the men and women defeated Southeastern 9-0 and 9-0. The wins improve the No. 18 men’s record to 13-6 and the No. 15 women’s record to 16-2.
The men got off to a fast start in doubles, picking up an 8-4 victory by No. 1’s Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos. Thomas Peixoto and Gonzalo Garzon sealed the victory at the No. 2 spot 9-7, while Duje Janjic and Dean Weigelt solidified an 8-3 victory in the third spot to carry a 3-0 lead into singles play.
The men continued to roll in singles play, as No. 2 through No. 6 each won in straight sets. Janjic was leading 5-0, prior to his opponent retiring due to injury. Ferrigno won his match 6-0, 6-3 and Garzon posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Angelo Lencioni and Campos delivered in the in No. 5 and No. 6 match-ups, rolling to victories 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.
No. 1 men’s featured the lone three-set match, with Peixoto walking away the victor two sets to one. Peixoto started strong, winning the first 6-4, but stumbled in the second and fell 2-6, setting up the deciding set. The Brazilian showed tremendous competitive spirit, trading shot for shot with his competitor. But in the end, the senior proved to much for his adversary, pulling out an 11-9 win to seal the 9-0 victory for the men.
The women matched the men’s aggressiveness, jumping ahead 3-0 after a quick round of doubles. Amanda Moberg and Sara Londono cruised to an 8-0 victory, and the No. 2 and No. 3 followed suit with consecutive 8-2 wins.
Each woman did their part in singles play as well. Amanda Moberg got the action started with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win, followed by Julia Puckhaber, who was leading 4-1 before her opponent retired due to injury.
Sara Londono matched Amanda Moberg’s scoring, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 slot. Elvira Sholles got the best of her counterpart, 6-2 and 6-0, while Florencia Tornero defeated her foe 6-1, 6-2. Antonia Moberg completed the sweep with a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory.Â
The men will return to action Thursday, traveling to Edmond to take on Oklahoma Christian at 5 p.m. The women will enjoy a break in action, remaining idle until April 3 when it takes on Southern Nazarene at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
