Aggies Drop A Pair To Jets, 5-4 and 8-3

WICHITA, Kansas (March 9, 2012) — Cameron traveled to Wichita, Kansas today to begin a four game series with the Newman University. Despite the Aggies best efforts, the Jets pulled out two victories on day one, 5-4 and 8-3. The losses for Cameron move its road record to 3-5, while the victories for Newman improve its home record to 8-0.

“We had a chance to win them both,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “We just couldn’t respond late in the games and get the job done. I think today they scored nine runs in the sixth inning combined. We just couldn’t get outs when we needed them. We had them beat, and until we learn to beat this kind of team, we are in trouble.”

Cameron (12-8) struck first in game one as Kevin Waukau hit his second homerun of the season in the second inning to put CU up 1-0 on Newman (13-6).

The Black and Gold went up 4-0 in the fourth inning scoring three runs and taking advantage of a costly Jet error. Josh Dawson led off the inning with a double down the right field line and was bunted over to third by Andy Garcia. Tyler Cox picked up an RBI with a shot to center, reaching base himself on an error. After a Nick Smith pop out, Waukau continued his hot streak with a RBI double to score Cox. Waukau would then come in on a single by Kevin Lum.

The Jets would go on to score three runs on starter Clay Vanderlaan (3-1), who took the loss, and two runs on Will Thomas in the final three innings to steal the victory from the Aggies.

“Clay (Vanderlaan) pitched well today,” Holland said. “He pitched good enough to win. Offensively, we probably hit better than we have all year. We should have won it.”

Cameron dropped game two 8-3 after battling close all game. Holland said the teams were tied at three heading into the sixth inning.

“We had the game tied 3-3 in the sixth (inning), and the wheels fell off,” Holland said. “Wade Myatt pitched another great game. He should have picked up a win. We need to learn to finish in these games.”

Stats for game two were not available at the time of this release.

The teams will conclude the series with a double header tomorrow. The first pitch will be at noon.
