CU Men Drop Tough Match to Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS – The No. 22 Cameron University men’s tennis team faced off against conference foe No. 34 Midwestern State this afternoon on the Mustangs’ home courts. Despite their best efforts, the Black and Gold men were unable to attain victory and fell in a heart-wrenching 5-4 decision.

The match began unfavorably for the Aggies as they dropped two of the three doubles contests. The tandem of Mateus Campos and Gonzalo Garzon went down 8-5, while Duje Janjic and Dean Weigelt suffered a tight 9-8 (12-10) loss – their first defeat of the season. The duo of Thomas Peixoto and Nicolai Ferrigno clinched the only doubles win of the day by dismissing Jarrod Liston and Tomas Grejtak 8-3 at the top position.

Peixoto and Ferrigno continued their fine form in singles play. Peixoto, who is ranked No. 38 in the nation, fought hard to secure his 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 victory over Mario Urban at the No. 1 slot. Ferrigno, on the other hand, comfortable beat Luke Joyce 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.

Jorge Gerosi clinched the only other singles win for the Black and Gold. The CU junior handled Jay Henton 7-5, 6-4.

Janjic and Garzon were both taken out in straight sets – the former fell 6-4, 6-4, while the latter was defeated 6-2, 6-4. Campos participated in a three set battle at the No. 5 spot against Kacper Boborykin. After surrendering the first set, the CU senior came back to seize the second, but could not hold on to the third, recording a final result of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The Aggie men are now 15-8 on the season. The squad’s next action will come at 1 p.m. on Friday when they face off against Arkansas-Fort Smith at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex.
