TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 17, 2012) — Cameron’s Men’s Golf Team led from start to finish at the Lone Star Conference Championships, claiming its 8th conference title.
“It was quite a battle up and down. We picked it up to finish strong. Proud of how we competed today. We made out weakness our strengths today.”
The Aggies shot an 863 (288-283-292) to finish one-under par. CU, the only team in the field to finish under par, was led by its lone senior, Garrett Smith. Smith shot a one-under 215 (71-68-76) to finish in third place in the individual race. He had an opportunity for the victory, but was caught by ACU’s Alex Carpenter and WT’s Ben Hargis, two of the top golfers in the nation.
Trey Lawson also had a solid performance, finishing in a tie for fifth place with a one-over 217 (74-71-72). Brady Porter was next in a tie for seventh place with a two-over 218 (73-74-71), followed by Michael Kelly in a tie for ninth with a three-over 219 (76-70-73). Kregg Wood finished in 24th place with a 15-over 231 (70-85-76).
Each Aggie golfer had a part in Cameron’s first conference title since 2008, something Hrnciar was proud of.
“At the start of the tournament I told the men we had the most balance,” Hrnciar said. “It showed today. Everyone had a sub-par round. We put a lot of effort into it. A lot of people thought we were down this year. But, the most enjoyable part was to have three second team all-conference players to Abilene’s three. I told the men to go out and beat the first team this year. That’s what we did.”
As a bonus for their efforts, both Smith and Lawson were named to the all-tournament team.
“They played great,” Hrnciar said. “They were consistent throughout the tournament for us.”
The win automatically qualifies the Aggies for a trip to the regional championships, which will be played May 6-9 at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, MO.
