Aggies Have Successful Weekend

LAWTON – The Cameron University women’s tennis team hosted a quad-match this weekend at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex. The No. 20 Aggies went 2-1 overall and bettered their season record to an incredible 19-3.

The Black and Gold kicked off the weekend by sweeping St. Mary’s University 9-0 on Friday morning. The CU women claimed all three doubles matches decisively. The pair of Amanda Moberg and Sara Londono defeated their opponents 8-2 at the top slot, while Elvira Sholles and Florencia Tornero topped Kelly Cooper and Denissia Gonzalez 8-2. The twosome of Julia Puckhaber and Antonia Moberg put on an especially impressive performance at the No. 3 position, failing to drop a game in their rout of Valentine Lambrechts and Erica Carmona.

The outstanding play continued into singles action. Amanda Moberg made quick work of her counterpart, collecting a routine 6-1, 6-1 win. Puckhaber was victorious as well, dispatching Angelique De Oliveira 6-3, 6-2. Londono, Sholles and Tornero all recorded identical 6-0, 6-1 victories at the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions. At the No. 6 spot, Antonia Moberg battled to take hold of the first set of her match, but after she found her rhythm she was unstoppable, punishing Mia Villaseñor 6-4, 6-0.

Later in the day, the women returned to the courts to face conference opponent Tarleton State. CU handled the No. 31 TexAnns in a comfortable 7-2 decision.

The Aggies secured doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Amanda Moberg and Londono worked hard for an 8-6 win, while Puckhaber and Antonia Moberg clinched their contest 8-2.

Unfortunately, Sholles and Tornero fell 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles slot. However, each came back to have easy wins over their singles counterparts. The CU junior recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position, and the sophomore earned a 6-3, 6-0 decision.

Amanda and Antonia Moberg also clutched wins for the Black and Gold. The former closed out a three-set battle over Alicia Perez at the top spot, beating the TexAnn 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. The latter had an easier go of things, handling Kayla Deatherage 6-1, 6-2.

Puckhaber saw the only singles loss of the day. She fell in a contentious 7-6, 6-2 decision.

The women took to the courts once again on Saturday morning to compete against NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma Christian.

Things started off on the wrong foot for the Black and Gold, as the women surrendered two of the three doubles contests. Amanda Moberg and Londono were taken out 8-2 by NAIA No. 1 Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova. At the No. 3 position, the tandem of Antonia Moberg and Tornero were up 4-2, 40-0 on the way to closing out the match when the Eagles’ Andreea Constantinescu and Maryfer Abreu dug deep and mounted a comeback, eventually pulling out the 8-6 win. However, Puckhaber and Sholles teamed up for the contest at the No. 2 slot and eased past their counterparts to document an 8-2 win.

Things continued to favor the Eagles in singles play. The hard-hitting, NAIA No. 2 Brhane was too much for CU’s Amanda Moberg; the 2011 All-American fell 6-2, 6-1 at the top position. Londono also faced defeat, losing 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.

Puckhaber and Sholles continued their fine form from doubles competition. The two silenced their opponents in straightforward 6-0, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-3 victories.

Oklahoma Christian went on to collect the matches at the No. 5 and 6 spots in matching 6-1, 6-2 decisions, allowing the Eagles to seal the 6-3 win.

The next action for both the Aggie women and men will come at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 when they square off against Dallas Baptist at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
