KINGSVILLE, Texas – Cameron got double-figure kills from
Kat Evans and
Kelle Carver but big sets late by Texas A&M Kingsville would prove to be CU's undoing at falling 3-1 in Kingsville on Friday night.
The Aggies will return home 5-12 overall and 0-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Javelinas moved to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in the LSC.
"We played well out of the gates, but we didn't execute well late in first set and they (Kingsville) took advantage of that," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "I was happy how we battled late in the second set after being down 24-22. It's tough to battle back from set point like that and we got the job done."
"Right now it's tough; we don't have the offensive firepower and can't stop teams on the other end. Then, we'd make some miscues and Kingsville took those opportunities and found ways to beat us tonight."
In the opening frame, both teams battled out of the gates with eight ties and five lead changes. The Aggies would take a slim 22-21 lead late after a TAMUK attack error and a CU ace. The Javelinas bounced back and recorded back-to-back kills and then finished Cameron off with a service ace to take the set, 25-23.
The second set played out similarly with both teams trading points. Texas A&M Kingsville had Cameron on the ropes late with a 24-22 lead forcing Tabbert and company to take a timeout and hope for some late magic.
An attack error and a bad set from the Javelinas gave CU a second chance. Both teams had an opportunity early in the extra frames but after a 27-27 tie; the Aggies got back-to-back points to win the set.
Cameron started the third set from behind after TAMUK opened with a four point run and extended their lead to nine points by the 15-6 mark. The Aggies used a pair of runs to close the gap to a 17-14 TAMUK lead. This would be the closest CU would get through, as the Javelinas would go on a 5-0 run to win the set 25-21.
Now playing from behind once again, the Aggies kept things close with the Javelinas, with both teams knotted up at seven. The momentum swung toward Texas A&M Kingsville after 4-0 run and used 17 kills to down Cameron in set four, 25-21.
Carver led the Cameron attack with 18 kills, while Evans recorded her first career double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Kayla Hebert had a match high 38 assists with
Erin Hardy leading both teams with 20 digs. As a team, Cameron had a .160 attack percentage with four eight blocks.
Texas A&M Kingsville had 23 total blocks and a .195 attack percentage, with three players with double-figure kills.
