WICHITA, Kan. -- The Cameron University volleyball team opened their second straight week on the a road with a 3-1 loss to Newman University in non-conference play Tuesday night in Wichita.
"We tried a few things differently tonight and moved to a 6-2, but we didn't have an enough offence beyond Kelle (Carver)," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "There were stretches where we played well but we made too many mistakes along with that."Â
"I'm happy about how we rallied back in the third set but we let the second set slip through our hands. Then we had eight blocking errors and those points can change the dynamic of the game which happened tonight for us."
Newman entered a six match winning streak and they jumped out in front early using a 10-2 run in the opening frame to cruise to a 25-18 win. Cameron controlled the better part of set two maintaining an advantage until the 22-20 mark when Newman made a 4-0 run to give them set point. The Aggies would manage to get one more point before Newman won the set 25-23.
Set three turned out to be a battle for both teams from start to finish. Newman was at match point (24-23) before
Kat Evans nailed down a kill and CU got to set point after a Jet error. Â Â Both teams would even back out at 25s until
Kelle Carver handled a pair of kills to win the set 27-25.
With some momentum Cameron kept Newman honest for half of the fourth set. However, the Jets to put a dagger into CU's hopes following a late 6-0 run that would carry them to a 25-18 set win.
Carver proved to be a force for CU, netting 19 kills, and she had a .349 attack percentage. Additionally, on the defensive end, Carver had a career best seven total blocks. Evans provided her second double-double in a row with 10 kills and 11 digs, while
Grace Newkirk chipped in 10 kills.
As a team Cameron had an attack percentage at .100 percent with 44 kills, while Newman hit at .192 percent with 62 kills.
Cameron (5-13 overall) will remain on the road for Lone Star Conference matches on Oct. 18-19 at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
