Portales, N.M.—The Cameron University volleyball team fell three sets to one against Eastern New Mexico Friday night at Greyhound Arena.
The Aggies offense got off to a slow start in the first set, only recording four total kills and nine errors to fall 25-12 in set one.
Cameron came out firing in set two, rattling off 18 kills with only four errors and a .395 attack percentage to tie the match up at one set a piece with a 25-23 win.
Kelle Carver had nine kills through the first two sets with a .500 attack percentage to lead the black and gold.
Although the Aggies played well in set three, the Zias made the most of some errors by CU and won another close set 25-21. Lauren Frye and Courtney Lawson had 15+ kills each by the end of the third frame.
"We played well in stretches tonight, sometimes we were good and other times not so much," said head coach Doug Tabbert.
In set four, Eastern New Mexico used a 10-0 run to put their lead at 16-6. The Aggies were able to force the Zias into some errors to make some ground on the ENMU lead, but more CU errors would diminish their chances of a comeback. Eastern New Mexico won the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Carver led the Aggies with 17 kills, a .333 attack percentage, and five blocks.
Kat Evans added 13 kills and four digs, while
Kayla Hebert recorded 36 assists. Freshman,
Paige Holt tied Carver with five total blocks, while
Erin Hardy and
Jenna Risoli both put up double digit dig nights.
"Kelle (Carver) was typical Kelle and she gave us solid numbers, but we really didn't answer the bell offensively."
The Zias were led by Frye, with 20 kills, five blocks, and a .389 attack percentage, and Lawson, who had a double double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Kennedi Catano had a career night for the Zias, totaling 50 assists and five digs.
The Aggies fall to 5-14 and 0-8 in LSC play, while Eastern New Mexico is now 5-13 with a 3-6 LSC mark.
Cameron will be back in action Saturday afternoon, when they head to Canyon, Texas to face the ninth ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at 2 p.m.
