LAWTON, Okla. – Despite career nights from multiple players, the Cameron University volleyball team fell 3-1 to the #19 Angelo State Rambelles on Friday night at the Aggie Gym.
Cameron fell behind after the first set, losing 25-20. The Aggies hit .234 in the set with only five errors, compared to the Rambelles .304 and four errors. Cameron was down 24-16 at one point and then went on a four point rally to close the gap to just four, before ASU put the set away.
The Aggies continued the momentum they gained into the second set. Cameron jumped out to a 9-3 lead before the Rambelles rolled out five straight points to cut the Aggie lead to one. After multiple rallies from both teams, the score was tied at 19. After back and forth kills, the score was again tied at 26. The Aggies used an ASU error and a kill by
Grace Newkirk to tie the match 1-1 with a 28-26 set win.
"We did a pretty good job going toe to toe with them through the first two sets," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "We might have missed a couple plays in the first set that could have made things different, but I was pretty happy with the way we played through the first half of the match."
The Rambelles came out firing in the third set, hitting .219 with only four errors. The Aggies hurt their cause by hitting .026 for the set with seven errors. ASU would take a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 third set.
CU got out to a 3-0 lead at the start of the fourth set, but multiple rallies by Angelo State took the lead 20-12. The Aggies fought back with a couple of big kills by Newkirk, but fell short, losing the set 20-25.
"In the second half we just had a few too many breakdowns, and they went on some runs that we didn't respond to like earlier in the match," said Tabbert.
Kelle Carver led the offensive attack with a season high 23 kills and a .291 attack percentage. Freshman setter
Kayla Hebert had a career high with 51 assist while also recording her eighth double double with 16 digs as well. Newkirk had a career high 16 kills with a.171 attack percentage.
"Grace certainly played at a different level offensively than she had been and we needed that. Kelle through the first two sets was almost unstoppable. The two of them playing well helped us with some balance on the offensive end," Tabbert added.
On defense,
Erin Hardy tied a career high in digs with 33 and
Jenna Risoli added a 14 dig game.
Rebecca Green helped out the team recording five block assist and a block solo to total six on the night.
"Ninety three digs as a team is huge, we made them work for kills and they have a lot of options so I felt good about our defense. We just need to find a way offensively to balance us out and get us over the hump."
The Rambelles were led by their setter, Maggi Jo Keffury, who had a double-double with 54 assists and 11 digs, and Kaelen Valdez, who had 13 kills and 21 digs. Additionally, Maddie Huth led the team with 16 kills.
The loss puts the Aggies at 6-16 overall and winless in conference play, while the #19 Rambelles are now 16-6 with an 8-3 conference mark.
Cameron will be back on the floor on Saturday, Oct. 26 as they take on Tarleton State at 2 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
