LAWTON, Okla.—In a five set thriller, the Aggie volleyball team lost 3-2 to the Tarleton State TexAnns today at the Aggie Gym.
Cameron jumped out to a 15-9 lead in set one, but allowed the TexAnns to mount an 8-1 run to take the lead 17-16. The Aggies responded with a five point run to go up 21-17. After back and forth points, the Aggies had match point 24-22. TSU had another rally in them, and rattled off four straight points to win the set 26-24.
The second set was much like the first, both teams put points on the board early, and CU got out to a big lead, 23-14. After a run by the TexAnns, the Aggies used a kill by
Rebecca Green and a service error by Tarleton State to take set two 25-20.
Tarleton State jumped out to a big lead in set three, only to have the set tied up at 23 by a six point rally. However, two kills by TSU's Stacie Murrah closed out the set 25-23, putting the TexAnns up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set remained close up until CU put together another impressive rally, scoring six straight points to win the set 25-17 and tie up the match at two sets a piece.
In the fifth and final set Tarleton State jumped out to a 11-7 lead, but the resilient Aggies made their way back and before the Aggie fans knew it, their team was tied 14 all with TSU. The comeback would fall short right there though, as two Aggie errors gave TSU the set win 16-14 and the match 3-2.
"Offensively and pretty much overall we were pretty effective," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "We had a few untimely errors, but that is going to happen sometimes. They (Tarleton) are loaded with offensive weapons, and to out-hit them by 32 points took a solid effort on our part."
Cameron was led once again by their big hitter
Kelle Carver, who improved from her performance last night by recording 27 kills, three short of a program high, having a hitting percentage of .446, and only had two errors.
Grace Newkirk and
Kat Evans also helped out the cause by getting 15 and 14 kills respectively.
"(Kelle) played like an All-American today and last night. To take as many swings last night and be as efficient as she was today, with everyone knowing she is our primary weapon, just shows how good she played," Tabbert added.
"Grace and Kat gave us some good balance. Twenty-nine kills between the two of them is something we really need, so it was a good effort on both of their parts."
Kayla Hebert surpassed her career high for assists that she set last night by dishing out 57 passes, and recorded her ninth double double of the season by recording 20 digs.
Cameron got another solid defensive game from
Erin Hardy, who had 25 digs, and
Jenna Risoli, who had 10 digs.
Murrah led the TexAnns with 23 kills, a .348 attack percentage, and three blocks, while Danielle Barker had a double-double with 61 assists and 10 digs.
TSU had three others with double digit kills and three others with double digit digs, including Emily Klein, who had 35 digs in the match.
The Aggies, who are now 6-17 and 0-11 in the LSC, hit .261 with five team blocks. TSU hit .229 with 11 total blocks, and improve to 13-9 and 6-4 on the season.
"I stressed to our players that it doesn't show in the outcomes, but this was a pretty good weekend for us as far as the level that we played and how long we sustained that level over extended periods of time. That is definitely something we can build on," Tabbert said.
Cameron will have its annual "Pink Game" on Oct. 29 as they host the #7 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at 7 p.m. at the Aggie Gym.
