WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A late comeback attempt by Cameron was dashed by Southwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday night in Weatherford. The Aggies fell behind two sets to none to the Bulldogs but they couldn't take the fifth set and fell for the eleventh time this season.
This was first time since 2011 that Cameron (5-11) has forced a fifth set after being down 0-2 to start the match. The Aggies haven't closed the deal on a full comeback since 2007.
"The real story tonight is how we helped Southwestern out after they got up 4-0 in the fifth set," said head coach Doug Tabbert.  "We had all the momentum heading into the set and we didn't do anything with it. We made plenty of mistakes down the stretch and didn't help ourselves out."
"Early in the match in sets one and two we had runs but by that point it was already too late. The tough part is winning sets three and four after being down but we didn't execute late."
In the opening frame, the Ags started from behind as the Bulldogs opened up a 10-4 lead out of the gates. Both teams would level off but Cameron couldn't get anything going on the offensive end recording eight kills with a .061 attack percentage to fall 25-18.
Set two started similarly, with SWOSU opening up on a 4-1 run to start things off. The Aggies countered with a run and both teams would get locked up at nine points apiece.  However, a 10-2 Bulldog run followed and forced Tabbert and company to burn both of their time outs. Cameron would make a comeback late going on a 5-0 run and getting within three points (22-19) of SWOSU. Despite the late effort, CU would only score one more point falling in set two, 25-20.
Following the intermission, Cameron came out as a different team taking the lead early and never looked back. The Aggies would record 14 kills and hit .235 from the floor to take the set 25-19.
In set four, Cameron continued to pour on the points opening with a 7-0 run. The Bulldogs countered, and chewed their way out of the hole and pulled within one point at the 11-10 mark. Both teams traded points before CU mounted a 7-1 run late to take the set 25-20.
Now forcing a fifth set Cameron was given a chance to take the match from the Bulldogs. The Aggies started on the wrong foot letting SWOSU open with a 7-2 lead before CU used a timeout. However, the damage was already done and Cameron couldn't get within five points for the remainder of the set, falling 15-8.
Kat Evans led the Aggie attack with 13 kills and fell a dig away from a double-double with nine.Â
Shannon DuLaney had her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.Â
Kelle Carver chipped in 12 kills while
Erin Hardy had a match high 23 digs.
Southwestern Oklahoma State was led by Carly Zak who had a match high 21 kills, while Joey Collins added 17 kills.
Cameron will return to Lone Star Conference action on Friday, Oct. 11 traveling to Texas A&M Kingsville.
