DUPONT, Wash. – The Cameron University men's golf team finds themselves in 13th place after carding a first round score of 293 (5-over) at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South Central/West Regional on Monday at The Home Course.
"We battled hard as a group," said head coach Jerry Hrnciar. "I thought we left a little here and a little there on the course, but overall we played well."
"With where we are placed right now there is no margin of error and I knew if we avoided a bad first day on the course we could improve in the following rounds and move up the leader board."
As the standings sit presently Cameron is five strokes back of fifth place which is the final transfer spot as to team to advance to the National Tournament. CSU-Monterey Bay is pacing the field with a nine-under, 279, and has a four stroke lead over Western Washington. Abilene Christian is in third carding a 287, while Grand Canyon and CSU-Stanislaus are tied for fourth with a 288.
Freshman Cullen Stahl paced the Ags with a one-under (71), Trey Lawson carded a one-over (73), Kregg Wood shot a two-over (74), while Corey Bounds finished with a three-over (75). Austin Weaver shot a ten-over on the front nine to start the tournament; he did recover with a one-over on the back nine but finished with an 83.
Dallas Baptist's Kyle Beard is leading the field after shooting a 66; he holds onto a one stroke lead over Santiago Gomen of Midwestern State, and Brandon Hortt of CSU-Monterey Bay.
The second round of the tournament will continue on Tuesday, May 7 with Cameron teeing off around 2:50 p.m. Lawton time. Fans can follow the action on GolfStat.com. Scores will be updated for each golfer every three holes.
