SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 16-ranked Cameron University men's tennis team's return to the NCAA National Tournament was short lived, falling to No. 9-ranked Lander University, 5-0 in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Cameron battled in doubles and each match could have went either direction but the Bearcats would sweep all three slots and head into singles needing only two matches to clinch the win.

In singles, the Bearcats momentum continued as Dean Weigelt would fall in the No. 6 slot, 6-1, 6-1, and Jorge Gerosi lost in the No. 4 slot, 6-2, and 6-3 to give Lander the win.

At the time play was suspended Dennis Merdan was the lone CU player who was on the verge of winning. Merdan won the first set, 6-3, and was winning set two 5-1. Angelo Lencioni dropped set one 6-2 in the No. 5 slot, but he was winning 5-3 in set two. In the No. 1 slot, Nicolai Ferrigno won the first set 7-6 and was tied 2-2 when the match was halted. Duje Janjic was swept 6-0 in the No. 2 slot but was recovering in set two, 5-5.

Despite the loss, Cameron finishes the season with a 22-4 overall record. The Aggies were also the Lone Star Conference regular season champions for the first time since 2009, and won the NCAA South Central Regional for the first time since 2008.
