First Serve
Cameron will have to regroup after a stunning sweep by Eastern New Mexico in their home opener on Tuesday night at the Aggie Gym. The Aggies were held to a .000 attack percentage and made 33 total errors in the loss.
Kelle Carver continued to lead Cameron on the offensive end by knocking over 15 kills and she had a .154 attack percentage.
Rebecca Green has quietly been Cameron stop-gap at the net leading the team with 16 total blocks; she had four last time out against ENMU.
Kayla Hebert recorded her fifth double-double and second in a row with 30 assists and 11 digs vs. the Zias.
Scouting Tarleton State
This will be Cameron's 36 official meeting with the TexAnns with the Aggies leading the overall series 25-10. Despite Cameron's lead in the overall series, they have dropped their seven matches in a row to Tarleton State. Prior to that, Cameron took 10 matches in a row from Tarleton State in between 2002 and 2007.
Entering the match, Tarleton State has a 5-4 overall record with a pair of losses coming from programs in the top-25 nationally. Within the conference, Tarleton is sixth overall in hitting percentage (.170) and second in digs per set (19.21). Individually, Hayley Couch is the league leader in digs per set (5.67) and Marissa Banda leads in service aces per set (.50); however Banda has only tossed up six from the service line this year.
Scouting Angleo State
The Rambelles are presently ranked ninth in the nation despite dropping their last two matches. Despite the losses they were to number-4 Concordia St. Paul who is the six-time defending NCAA National Champion, and number-14 Southwest Minnesota State.
Against Angelo State, the Aggies are 12-22 overall, and Cameron as dropped their last seven in a row dating back to the 2008 season.
Angleo State is second in the league in overall hitting (.216), third in assists per set (12.52), and first in digs per set (19.21). The Rambelles have a pair of hitters who are second and third in the conference in hitting percentage (Kailyn Troxell and Courtney Bartusiak), Maggie Jo Keffury is second in assists per set (10.77), and Maddie Huth is third in blocks (1.11 per set).
Youth Movement
Cameron enters the 2013 season with 14 sophomores and freshman on its squad. Half of that group saw major playing time last year for the Aggies which should pay dividends this year.
Picked Eighth
Cameron University Volleyball team was selected to place eighth in the Lone Star Conference with 62 points. West Texas A&M is a slight favorite to capture the Lone Star Conference title earning first-place votes on 12 of the 25 ballots for a total of 211 points. Angelo State, the reigning LSC Champions, was a close second with 10 first-place nods to finish with 208.
Texas Woman's was third with 161 points and the remaining three first-place votes, while Tarleton State was fourth (155), Texas A&M-Commerce fifth (113), and Texas A&M-Kingsville sixth (101).
Midwestern State (81), Cameron (62), and Eastern New Mexico (33) rounded out the poll.
Welcome Back Carver
After missing the 2012 season,
Kelle Carver is back to her old form on the court. She is averaging 3.65 kills per set in nine matches played, which is top in the LSC, and has 113 total kills. Carver landed on the Henderson State All-Tournament Team a couple weeks ago, and she has rattled off a streak of four double digit kill games.
The Freshman
Kayla Hebert in her first weekend recorded 145 assists and leaving the weekend led the Lone Star Conference. Hebert fired off her first career double-double, recording 48 assists and 22 digs against Southwest Baptist. She is now fifth in the LSC in digs per set, with 10.07, and has five double double games.
Other freshman Maci Terrell and Kelsi Coplen have played key roles for the Aggies so far this season. Terrell had a double double earlier in the season, with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Coplen is second on the team in blocks, with 12.
Green Machine
Junior,
Rebecca Green is leading the Aggies in blocks with a total of 16. She is averaging .52 blocks per set and is riding a streak of two four block games.
Acuna Matata
Stepping in and filling the Libero roll for CU is exactly what sophomore
Lauren Acuna has done so far this season. Acuna is third in the LSC with 4.68 digs per set, and is also has the fifth best service aces per set percentage (.36) in the conference. Against Southern Nazarene (9/13) she set her career high for digs in a match with 25, and has had five straight 15+ dig games.
Coming Up
Cameron will get a taste of their first long home stand, with four straight home matches to close out September and kick off October. They start with a Friday/Saturday turn around with Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's, and then will host St. Gregory's on the following Tuesday. Cameron will close out the home stand with a Saturday match against rival Midwestern State on Oct. 5.
