Box Score
LAWTON, Okla. – Despite a late comeback in the fourth set, the Cameron University volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Texas A&M Commerce Lions tonight at the Aggie Gym.
After what looked like a dominating first set by the Lions, who hit .312 and won the set 25-11, Cameron fought tough in the second but started to fall behind towards the end and lost set two 25-19. The Aggies hit in the negatives through the first two sets, which led to a lack of offense for the black and gold.
Cameron found their stroke in the third set, as they hit .316 with 16 kills and only four errors. The Aggies got locked in a battle that included 11 ties and only four lead changes. With the help of some Lion errors and some great CU defense the Aggies got on the board and won set three 25-22.
The two teams saved their best for last, tying the score up 12 times in the fourth set. The Aggies took a quick lead but could not keep the errors down, as Commerce crawled back into it. After a lot of back and forth points, Commerce went up 19-16, but the Aggies went on a 5-1 run that put CU on top by one.
The Lions got up 24-22, but kills from
Kelle Carver and
Jenna Risoli tied it up at 24. An error from CU's Maci Terrell and a kill by A&M-Commerce's Amy Devault won the set and the match for the Lions 26-24.
"I was proud of how we played the last half of the match, after being disappointed on how we started," head coach Doug Tabbert said. "We just did some things in the beginning that made it difficult to find success."
The Aggies were led by Carver, who had 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .289.
Kat Evans struck for six kills, while
Rebecca Green finished with five kills. They were set up by the duo of setters
Kayla Hebert, who had 24 assists, and Risoli, who had eight.
Lauren Acuna helped out the Aggies defense with 23 kills, while the middle blockers of Green and
Annelise Carpenter struck for five and four blocks respectively.
"We got some good offense from a couple people on the right and in the middle, and defensively we had some plays made by a couple people. Our blocking was as good as it has been in a while. We just struggled on the left side and couldn't stop their left side and that made a difference in the match."
Commerce got a big game from Devault, who had a double-double with 17 kills and 18 digs, with a .382 hitting percentage. As a team the Lions hit .234, while the Aggies only hit .084.
Cameron will have a quick turnaround, as they host the Texas Woman's pioneers tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
"(Texas Woman's) will be a challenge; they are very physical and have had some good wins already this year. We have to find a way to bounce back in a short amount of time. We are probably going to see a better team tomorrow then we saw tonight, so it will be a challenge for us."
