LAWTON, Okla. – The #49 Cameron women's tennis team fended off a surging Newman squad 6-3 for their 16th win of the season on Saturday.
Carrying a 19-2 record into their match with the Aggies, Newman who was ranked sixth in the NCAA South Central Region had an opportunity to knock down the third ranked CU squad and make a case for a possible at-large berth into the national tournament.
Cameron didn't blink first after taking doubles 2-1 over the Jets and the middle of the CU singles lineup pushed CU to the finish line for the in-region win.
Samantha Wood won her fifth singles match in a row and 18th of the season by winning the three-slot 6-3, 6-0.
Florencia Tornero continued her consistent play this year with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the four-slot for her 18th win of the season;
Paula Gutierrez-Casas would only drop one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win in the two-slot.
Cameron will have one day off before visiting Midwestern State on Monday at 2 p.m. where the winner will be crowned the 2014 Lone Star Conference regular season champions.
