Aggies face Javelinas in LSC tournament

Cameron in the LSC Tournament: This is Cameron's 15th appearance in the Lone Star Conference Tournament and first time since the end of the 2004 season that Aggies have made consecutive postseason berths. At the LSC Tournament the Aggies are 11-13 overall with five trips to the tournament final, and one (1998) tournament title. The Aggies have faced Texas A&M-Kingsville in LSC postseason twice in 1997 and 2002 with the tournament series split at 1-1. Overall this will be CU's 74th postseason match where they have collected a 44-29 (.603) record.
 
Setting the Stage: The Aggies are 22-11 against Texas A&M-Kingsville and 6-2 at neutral sites. This season, the series was split with both teams winning on the road. On Sept. 18, the Aggies opened LSC play by sweeping TAMUK on the road for the first time since Oct. 12, 1991 to move to 9-0. However, Cameron would fall short in five sets to the Javelinas in the Aggie Gym during their next match-up.
 
About Texas A&M-Kingsville: The Javelinas finished the season with a 19-14 record and an 8-8 LSC mark. As a team, TAMUK hit .176 in the regular season, while averaging 12.7 kills, 11.9 assists, and 17.7 digs per set. They were second in the LSC in aces per set with 1.38 and had 170 total. Texas A&M-Kingsville is led by Krystal Faison, who averaged 3.04 kills per set and hit .181 in the regular season. She also leads her team in service aces with 35 in addition to contributing 468 digs. Casey Klobedans is fifth in the league in hitting percentages with a .287 clip, recording 148 kills on the season.
 
Regionally Ranked: The Aggies dropped two spots to tenth place in the South Central Region with the release of the last of three postseason polls on Wednesday afternoon. The regional poll is comprised of teams from the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences with three slots reserved for a league tournament champion, while the other five spots are at-large bids. Cameron has qualified for the NCAA National Tournament twice in program history in 1998 and 2001; prior to this season Cameron as not appeared in the regional poll since 2006. LSC schools Angelo State and Tarleton State are one and two in the poll. Cameron would likely need to win the conference tournament to secure a postseason bid.
 
Leading CU:
Cameron was led most of the season by the three prong attack of Kat Evans, Jenna Gillean, and Jordan Williams. Evans led the team with 2.93 kills per set, while hitting .224, and also averaging 3.13 digs per set as well. Gillean was CU's second leading offensive player with 2.71 kills per set and hit .278, while Williams averaged 2.15 kills per set. Gillean also led the team with 81 total blocks, averaging .84 per set. CU saw two at the setter position with Tori Luckenbill averaging 8.49 assists per set, while Madison Holle averaged 4.64. Cristina Viera led the team in digs by averaging 4.11 per set for a total of 399 during the regular season.
 
By the numbers:
1 – Kat Evans is the lone senior on the Aggie squad and is one of nine CU volleyball players to surpass 1,000 kills.  The Pearland, Texas native has played in 117 matches and has 1,311 kills, which is fourth highest all-time at Cameron.
12 – Youth is the theme of the 2015 season for the Aggies with 12 freshmen on the roster
13 – Cameron opened the season at 13-0 with their best start since the 1998 season where they opened the year 22-0.
15 – Cameron's roster consists of players from two states and one international, with 15 out of the 17 hailing from the state of Texas.
27 – On Oct. 27 the Aggies beat West Texas A&M for the first time since the 1998 LSC Tournament Championship.
37 – This is the 37th overall season for the Aggie volleyball program which ran from 1972-81, and was reestablished in 1987.
45 – Cristina Viera broke the school record for digs in a match on Saturday, Sept. 26 against Southern Nazarene.
51 – The number of assists Tori Luckenbill had in three sets during a victory against Harding; that number is tied for second highest for a match this season in NCAA Division II volleyball.
247 – Head Coach Qi Wang's number of wins in 11 seasons.
 
Up next: If Cameron gets past Texas A&M-Kingsville, they will play either Eastern New Mexico or tournament host Tarleton State on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
