Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggie women fall to #6 West Texas A&M, 81-67

LAWTON – Turnovers and missed free throws were Achilles heal of the Cameron women's basketball team Saturday afternoon, as they lost 81-67 to No. 6 West Texas A&M at the Aggie Gym. The Lady Buffs took a game and half lead in the Lone Star Conference standings with their 11th conference win, while the Aggies fall to 10-3 in LSC play.

The Aggies shot over 40 percent from the field and the three point line, but hit on only six of their 15 free throw attempts and turned the ball over 19 times in the loss. Cameron got 28 points in the paint and 14 points off of turnovers.

"It boils down to turnovers, free throws, a couple loose balls we didn't get, and a couple unforced turnovers," said head coach Tom Webb.  "All that stuff comes back to me; I have to get our team prepared, but our kids played hard tonight."

Brandi Leal paced CU with 18 points, hitting six three point shots. Both Jazzmine Robinson and Jade Herl scored 15 points, with Robinson adding six rebounds, six assists, and two steals, while Herl was 5-8 from behind the arc. Additionally, DJ Vallier led the team with seven rebounds and four blocks.

The first half started with both teams going back and forth, until WT started to pull away at the 10 minute mark, going on an 8-3 run to build up a 10 point lead. Cameron made their comeback with just about two minutes left, scoring eight unanswered points to close out the first half just down six points, 40-34. The Aggies shot 42 percent from the field, deep, and the charity stripe in the first frame, as Robinson led the CU with 12 points and WT's Chontiquah White already had double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds heading into intermission.

Cameron started out the half with a Cristina Soriano layup, but the Lady Buffs responded with four straight points.  A pair of Leal three pointers and a Briana Underwood bucket tied the game at 44 all, but that would be as close as they got, as WT built up a small and held it the rest of the way, shooting 50 percent from the field to lead to the win.

"It's a team game.. at the end of the day we have to play as a team, and t's not about any one person. We play as a team, and that's when we are good. We did that today and fought together, it just didn't turn out our way."

West Texas A&M shot almost 50 percent for the game, going 40 percent from three, and 73 percent from the free throw line. They were led by White who had 25 points and 15 rebounds, while three other Lady Buffs were in double figures.

The Aggies will be back in action on Feb. 18 as they head to Texas A&M-Kingsville for their second to last road game of the regular season.

"We are just going to worry about Kingsville right now. We talked about it in the locker room that we have to move on, rest, take care of business, and see where it goes."
