PLANO, Texas –The number-20 Cameron men's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season, 8-1 to the NJCAA number-2 ranked Tyler Junior College on Friday afternoon.
Tyler JC was 5-2 heading in the match with the Aggies and has played a split NCAA Division I and II schedule. They also defeated Midwestern State 11 days ago.
"They are really good and should with the JuCo National Title," said head coach
James Helvey. "It was good for us, best tennis we've played this year."
The Aggies fell behind 3-0 early, after losing in all three of their doubles matches. Both the No. 1 pairing of
Andres Velasco and
Mateo Velasco and the No. 2 pairing of
Dennis Merdan and
Joao Fazendeiro fell 8-4 in their matches, while the No. 3 pairing of
Felipe Oyarzun and
Angelo Lencioni fell 8-6.
In singles, Merdan in the one spot and Fazendiero in the two spot lost 6-3,6-3, while both
Artavazd Knyazyan and M. Velasco fell 6-3, 6-2 in the three and four spots. The lone point for CU came in the fifth singles match, where Lencioni defeated his opponent 6-3, 7-5. Oyarzun rounded out the group, falling 7-5,6-3 in the sixth spot.
Cameron (4-1) will be back in action on Feb. 25 at Southeastern Oklahoma.
