LAWTON – The Aggies didn't have the prettiest of games but they managed to scrap their way to a 75-69 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday night. Cameron will move to 10-8 overall and more importantly, 7-2 in Lone Star Conference play; with seven games to play CU has a two game lead on fourth place and holds the tiebreaker over the Lions.
"It feels great to get this win," said head coach
Tom Webb. "Second half we played like we are capable. We are right there. Sometimes we lose who we are a little bit, but in the second half we settled down, played a lot faster, got up and down a little bit, and put some points on the board. I am just really proud of our team."
Cameron shot 30.4 percent on the floor, their second lowest shooting night, but matched their season mark for rebounds with 56. The Aggies were sent to the line 32 times and needed each of their 24 made points to pull away at the end of the night.
Jazzmine Robinson was a rebound short of a double-double but had a game high 22 points and nine rebouinds.
Brandi Leal came away with 18 points off of four treys to give her 67 for the season, which is five away from tying the program mark set by
Chelsea Stamp last season; Leal did have a career mark for rebounds with eight.
Jade Herl was the other Aggie in double-figures with 12 points.
DJ Vallier added seven boards and had a pair of blocks.
The Lions shot 34.7 percent from the field and went 21.1 percent from the arc. La'Tisha Hearne paced A&M-Commerce with 16 points, and Artaejah Gay added 13.
In the first half, Cameron had to go through the motions and battled back from an eight point hole at the 13 minute marker and took a 27-26 lead after a Leal three-pointer with two minutes left. However, Texas A&M-Commerce would retake a small one point, 29-28 advantage at the intermission despite 22.9 percent shooting from the Aggies. The Lions did not do much better on their side of the court with 27 percent shooting.Â
Cameron would trail as many as eight points but they used an 8-2 run and tied the game a 61 each with 4:25 left in the contest. Both teams traded points, but after a two point A&M-Commerce, 67-66 advantage with 2:09 left, the Aggies would then get the last laugh and hold the Lions silent to score six unanswered to lead them to the league win.
"They battle. You can say what you want about the size, but I'll take the size of the heart way more. Our kids have heart, and they are going to battle every night. Just like A&M-Commerce, they battled all night too. You have to give credit to both teams. There was no give up on either team. Jazzmine hit a couple big free throws to put us up by four, and that kinda helps."
After leading for over 31 minutes, the Lions loss to the Aggies will drop them to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in LSC play.
Cameron will have a quick turnaround and will host Texas Woman's on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
"The girls are going to go to class tomorrow, and then we are going to show up to the gym and play. That's exactly how we did it before, and we are going to figure it out."
