LAWTON – Cameron nearly coughed up an 11 point lead in the final minutes and a last second shot missed for Texas Woman's sending the Aggies to a 67-65 win on Thursday night.   The win is CU's seventh out of their last eight and brings them to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
With the victory the Aggies have pulled within a half game of West Texas A&M and are tied for second place overall with Midwestern State.
Jazzmine Robinson paced the Ags with 20 points, while adding seven rebounds, and had a career high six steals.Â
Jade Herl added 14 points;
Markita Zeigler had eight points and matched
DJ Vallier with a game high eight boards. Â
Brandi Leal had nine points off of three triples to get her to 70 for the season; she needs two to tie
Chelsea Stamp for the program mark in a season.
Cameron shot 42 percent from the field, but was bested by TWU who shot 43.5 percent on their side of the court. The Aggies won the rebounding battle by two with 37 for the night. Â
"I think at the end of the day number one you've got to be pleased at our effort," said head coach
Tom Webb. "The pace was great, when we run, we get shots and it makes them hard to guard and we need those things and I was just proud they hung in there."
"They have played hard from day one, there's one thing you can say about this group, they love each other, they're going play for one another, win, lose, or draw, they're going to be there for one another."
Cameron came slowly out of the gates and Texas Woman's took advantage by taking a nine point lead by the nine minute marker. However, the Aggies pulled off an 11-2 run on TWU to tie the contest at 22 each with 4:11 left in the half but the Pioneers quickly reacted back with 10 unanswered.   The closing minute of the half was owned by CU with Leal knocking down a three and a
Charron Montgomery layup closed the gap to 32-27 at the intermission.
The Aggies remained within a pair of possessions and after a 42-36 TWU lead with 14:39 left, Cameron shut down the Pioneers on the offensive end and rattled off 17 straight points to take a commanding 57-44 advantage with 8:10 remaining.   CU maintained a double-digit lead until the final minutes and TWU nearly gave the Aggies more than they could bargain for by and scored 10 unanswered to pull within a point to trail the Ags 66-65 with 37 seconds to go. The Aggies had possession next and turned it over with 22 seconds left to hand TWU a shot to win the game. TWU set a play up and with three seconds to go a layup attempt rattled in and out to hand the win to Cameron.
Toree Mason led the Pioneers with 14 points and they will fall to 12-10 overall and 5-6 in league play.
The Aggies will be on the road for their next two contests starting with Tarleton State on Saturday and a visit to Eastern New Mexico this upcoming Wednesday.
