Aggie baseball drops a pair at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – On a foggy, cold day in Texas, the Aggie baseball team lost their first conference double header by dropping a pair of games to the #8 Angelo State Rams on Sunday afternoon. Cameron is now 6-7 and 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while ASU moves to 12-1 and 2-0 in league play.

The Aggies had seven hits in the 6-3 game one loss and had two fielding errors, while they tallied 10 hits, two errors, and lost 5-4 in game two.

Jonathan Reyes and Matt Nilmeyer both had three hits on the day, while Tyler McKinzie, Russ Colgan, and Tyler Cook each had two RBI. Reyes scored two runs as well and Tyler Palmer had a pair of hits in game one.

Angelo State opened the scoring in game one in the bottom of the third inning. They then tacked on three more in their half of the fifth, making it 4-0.

Cameron finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, getting two runs on a double from McKinzie, who then scored on an RBI double from Palmer, which made it 4-3 in favor of the Rams.

ASU responded in the bottom of the sixth and added two more on a Nehwon Norkeh two run homer, to make it 6-3. The Aggies would then go three up three down in the seventh to close out game one.

Dirk Masters got his second loss of the season, as he went five innings, gave up two earned runs on eight hits, and struck out six.

Cameron was the first to get on the board in game two, pushing across two runs in the top of the third inning. Cook drove in Reyes and Nate Hale to give CU the 2-0 lead.

The Rams came back and tied the game in the fourth with two runs of their own and then took the lead with two more in the fifth and then added another in the seventh to make it 5-2.

Cameron's last chance would come in the top of the ninth inning. After Hale lined out to open the inning, Reyes reached base on a walk and then advanced to second on a groundout by Nilmeyer. Cook was then walked, and the Aggies had two on with two outs. Colgan then hit a triple to right center to drive in Reyes and Cook and make it a one run game with a runner on third. Cody Knight then grounded out to the ASU third baseman and the Ram's snuck out of trouble with a 5-4 win in game two.

Aggie starter, Codey Upton, went three and two thirds innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits and walked five ASU batters. The loss went to Jordan Dailey, who surrendered one earned run on two hits in only two thirds of an inning of work. Additionally, Zach Cordell struck out seven batters, and had no earned runs on four hits in the final three and two thirds innings for CU.

Cameron and ASU will be back on the field on Monday for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
