Late inning runs by ASU prove costly for Aggies

SAN ANGELO, Texas --  Cameron could not hold off a pair of late inning rallies by number-8 Angelo State to fall 5-4 in eight innings in game one and 4-2 in the nightcap on Monday.

With the two wins by the Rams, they completed the four game sweep of the Aggies to drop them to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in Lone Star Conference play; the Rams will move to 14-1 and 4-0 in league action.

After Angelo State kicked off the game with a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, the Aggie tied it up in the top of the third, thanks to a Tyler Cook RBI single that scored Nate Hale. Unfortunately, the Rams took the lead back in their half of the third to make it 2-1. CU came right back in the fourth and tied the game up at two on an RBI single from Tyler McKinzie that scored Cody Knight.

Both teams went three up three down in the fifth inning, but ASU struck for another run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homerun.

Cameron then scored three runs in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3. Jonathan Reyes drove in Tyler West on an RBI double, and then Matt Nilmeyer hit an RBI single to drive in Reyes. Nilmeyer then scored on an error by the Ram first baseman to give the Aggies the two run lead. However, ASU loaded the bases with no outs and tied the game with a run on a wild pitch and a run on a fielder's choice groundout. Logan Fanning would get the third out on a pop fly to right to send the seven inning game to extra innings.

The Aggies got a hit in the top of the eighth, but couldn't muster anything else, as ASU got a two out walk-off RBI single from Nehwon Norkeh to get the 6-5 win.

Javarias Banks pitched six innings and gave up only two earned runs on seven hits with five punch outs, while Logan Fanning got the loss, going the final one and two thirds innings, and giving up one run on three hits with a strike out of his own.

In the nightcap, Cameron jumped out in front first with a two RBI single from Jonathan Reyes.   However run support for CU starter Nolan Withrow ended there and he went through five innings allowing only one hit before ASU knocked in four runs in the sixth.

The Aggies attempted a comeback in the ninth after opening the inning with a pair of singles, a grounder would put the tying run at second but CU would end the game with back-to-back strike outs.

Russ Colgan, Tyler McKinzie, and Cook all had a pair of hits.  Withrow tossed a complete game with four strikeouts and four earned runs given up.

Cameron will return home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four game series starting on Friday.
